BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State Beavers scored three goals in a 0:54 second span in the first period and didn't look back, shutting out the Wildcats 4-0 on Friday, January 20. It was the fastest sequence of three goals for the Beavers since 2006.
After the 'Cats looked prominent offensively in the game's first five minutes, a sudden shock of three Bemidji State goals in less than a minute took the sails out of the 'Cats and they were never able to regain their footing, managing just 18 shots on goal in the game, tying a season-low mark. The Beavers put 35 shots on net in the game.
The shutout marked the first time this season the Wildcats were kept out of the net.
How it Happened
After NMU's first line of
Andre Ghantous,
David Keefer, and
Joey Larson was buzzing on their first two shifts, the Beavers suddenly opened the floodgates, scoring three goals in a 54-second span to sink the Wildcats.
The Beavers scored their first on a two-on-one after a turnover. Kaden Pickering got the tally. The second goal came 28 seconds later on a breakaway from Eric Martin. The final tally in the three-goal sequence was from Mitchell Martan, following some bad puck luck in front of the net for the 'Cats.
BSU went on to pressure NMU the rest of the first period, putting 19 shots on goal to just eight from Northern.
The first penalty of the night came nearly halfway through the second period after a Beaver tripping. The 'Cats couldn't take advantage to get back in the game, getting held without a shot on the man advantage. Bemidji would go on to score their fourth goal of the night with 3:46 to go in the middle period, coming off of another Wildcat turnover in the defensive zone.
The 'Cats were held to just three shots in the middle frame, with Bemidji recording seven.
The best opportunity to score for the 'Cats came in the third with more than a minute of 5-on-3, but Bemidji's penalty kill got the best of the matchup and kept NMU out of the net.
