DETROIT, Mich.- The Wildcats swim and dive team were back in the pool this weekend, as they were on the road in the Motor City taking on the University of Findlay and Wayne State University.
Freshman
Tobie Stiles highlighted the meet for the Wildcats. In the 1-meter dive, Stiles broke a school record from 1980 of 305.65 with his 308.10. He also qualified for the national prequalification meet with his performance. Congratulations, Tobie!
Final Scores
Overall, the Women's team walked away with losses to Wayne State and wins against Findlay. Friday and Saturday's scores were 162-138 against WSU and 234-60 against Findlay.
The men's side took wins all around when they beat WSU 173-161 and Findlay 137-136.
Friday
The women Wildcats started out strong in the 200-yard Medley Relay where they took first with Group A's
Camilla Carbone,
Zoe DeKievit, Txell Font-Cantarero, and
Olivia Haerr. They also took third with Group B's
Faith Sill, Evelyn DeCarlo,
Donna Hannig,
Joanne Arbic. The men, on the other hand, started with a struggle. Group A came in fourth and B in fifth. Group A included
Leo Nolles,
Roberto Camera,
Ryan Lund, and Marty Wolmarans while Group B had
Thibault Auger,
Andrew Tease,
Liam Boomer, and
Daniel Khmara.
The women trailed behind WSU during the 1-meter dive where
Lauren Plockmeyer earned third place with a final score of 203.03.
Tobie Stiles took the first place title where he had a final score of 284.93.
For the 3-meter dive,
Tobie Stiles came in second, with a score of 283.64. The women took third through sixth, with the following divers: Plockmeyer (third), Smith (fourth), McCabe (fifth), and Germain (sixth). Their scores ranged from 206.40 to 149.63.
Events 5, 14, and 23 were all about the Women's 50-yard Butterfly. In event 5, Font-Cantarero,
Jillian McKinley, and Hannig led the group with times between 26.47 and 26.72. Font-Cantarero once again claimed first in event 14 with a time of 26.11 and
Jenna Joerger was right behind her, coming in at 26.50. Font-Cantarero brought her A-game for a third time when she came in first and ended with a time of 25.93.
As for the men, Lund and Ben Stohlberg came in third and fourth during event 6 with times of 23.57 and 23.66. Event 15 had Lund and Stolberg finishing in fourth and fifth places. In their final shot at prevailing during the 50-yard Butterfly, Lund took third place, coming in behind Wayne State and Findlay with a final of 22.94.
The 50-yard Backstroke covered events 7, 8, 16, 17, 25, and 26. Sill came in first for the women with a time of 27.17 and Carbone in third at 27.38. In event 16, Sill and Carbone claimed it with times of 26.93 and 26.95 for the first and second placers. Sill had first place in the palm of her hand during this whole event when she came in with a final time of 26.64 during event 25.
The Men had Auger placing second at 24.15, Nolles and Kapocius were in fourth and fifth with times of 24.44 and 25.00. During their second shot, Auger and Nolles rushed to the third and fourth behind Findlay and Wayne State with times of 24.10 and 24.13, beating Findlay's fifth place title by 0.55. Their final chance had Auger claiming third, where he came in at 23.92, trailing Findlay.
Events 9, 18, and 27 were all about the women's Breaststroke. DeKievit, DeCarlo, and Billings made fourth, fifth, and sixth falling in between the times of 31.24 and 31.97. In Event 18, fourth and fifth placer's, DeKievit and DeCarlo, made times of 31.35 and 31.49. DeKievit's win during their final shot in this event ultimately beat Wayne State by .35 with her final being 30.34.
The men's version of this covered Events 10, 19, and 28. Camera took fourth in the first with a time of 27.06 and Tease in sixth with 28.18. Similar to event 18 on the women's side, Camera and Tease took fourth and fifth with final times of 27.33 and 27.75. Camera had a final time of 26.31 when he came in second during the last attempt in this event.
The 50-yard Freestyle was held by event 11, 12, 20, 21, 29, and 30. Haerr, Nelson, and Arbic placed second through fourth with times of 24.87, 24.93, and 25.07. Their second attempt had Nelson and Haerr claiming second and third places, coming in before Findlay's swimmers, with times of 24.46 and 24.80. Event 29, their last ditch effort, showed Nelson placing second, coming in a mere 0.01 behind Wayne State. Her final time was 24.15.
Events 12, 21, and 30 were dedicated to the men taking the driver's seat for the 50-yard Freestyle. NMU fell short throughout this event with Khmara, Ramsbottom, LaCount, and Robillard taking tenth through thirteenth. During their second shot, Khmara and Ramsbottom placed fifth and sixth. In their final ride, Khmara had a downfall in this event when he placed third, coming in at 22.17.
For the 650-yard Freestyle, which was only held for the Women, Steigauf, Font-Cantarero, and Aarseth placed fourth, fifth, and sixth with times of 6:57.91 (Steigauf), 7:02.74 (Font-Cantarero), and 7:03.17 (Aarseth).
The Men went up against the 700-yard Freestyle where Zach pulled through for the Wildcats when he placed first with a final time of 6:38.74 coming in only 2.19 seconds before Wayne State. Pullinen, Lopez-Aponte, and Robillard came in fourth through sixth.
The 100-yard IM were about both teams once again. Joerger led the pack for the ladies when she came in at 1:00.96 with Wayne State right on her tail. Billings and Nelson claimed third and fourth with their finals being 1:01.26 and 1:02.12. The men took fourth, fifth, and sixth with Pena-Reyes, Lopez-Aponte, and Kapocius. Their final times were 54.62, 54.66, and 54.79.
The final event for the night was the 200-yard Freestyle Relay where the Wildcat Women's Groups A and B trailed behind Wayne State's Group A. Group A consisted of Nelson, Haerr, Arbic, and Hannig having a final time of 1:37.94. Group B included McKinley, Strazny, Sill, and Burrows where they came in at 1:40.23. The male Wildcats took second place behind Wayne State by 1.46 when Wolmarans, LaCount, Camera, and Nolles had a final time of 1:24.61. Group B's Khmara, Ramsbottom, Lowery, and Rice took fifth place.
Saturday
Kicking off the Saturday meet was the 400-yard Medley Relay. The Women's Group A took the win, coming in at 3:56.47. This included Sill, DeKievit, Font-Cantarero, and Haerr. Group B took third consisting of Strazny, DeCarlo, Nelson, and Arbic. Auger, Camera, Lund, and Nolles were a part of the Men's Group A who came in third place.
Steigauf placed third in the 1000-yard Freestyle with a time of 11:00.27. Franny Gastrow was behind Steigauf when she came in at 11:12.42. Zach came out on top for the Men, coming in at 9:37.40. Robillard made his mark when he placed third and had a time of 10:01.78.
Hannig and Joerger claimed fourth and fifth in the 200-yard Freestyle where they had times of 1:58.20 and 2:00.25. Similar to the Women, Khmara and Pullinen placed fourth and fifth. Right behind them was Kapocius and Lopez-Aponte.
Carbone earned the first place title in the 100-yard Backstroke where she had a final time of 58.40. Sill was close behind in third where she finished at 58.88. Nolles and Auger were a tag team in the event where they took third and fourth with times of 52.19 and 52.91.
DeKievit made her presence known once again when she came in at 1:07.27 and came out on top. Camera took second for the Men when he had a final time of 58.90. Tease came in fourth right behind a Wayne State swimmer.
Font-Cantarero was close to placing first but fell a bit short when she came in at 2:07.87, only 0.77 behind Wayne State. Lowery placed third with Werwie and Pena-Reyes trailing in fourth and fifth.
Events 13 and 14 were all about the 50-yard Freestyle where Haerr, Nelson, and Arbic fell into places two through 4. Nolles took one for the team when he came in third at 20.91, right in front of Wayne State.
The 1-meter Dive tested the Women, with
Lauren Plockmeyer earning second place with her final score of 382.13.
The men's side of the 1-meter dive was the highlight of the meet for the Wildcats.

For the 3-meter Dive, Stiles came in second with a score of 275.85 while Plockmeyer, McCabe, Germain, and Smith landed in third through sixth. These Women trailed behind Wayne State by 9 seconds.
The 100-yard Freestyle had a win from Haerr at 52.62 while Arbic and and Burrows claimed fifth and sixth respectively. Nolles also took the win for the Men with a time of 46.66 and had LaCount close behind in third at 47.49.
Billings placed second for the 200-yard Backstroke with Strazny, Sill, and Carbone filling the spots behind her. Kapocius took the lead on the Men's side when he came in at 1:53.02. Auger and Werwie placed third and fourth right behind Findlay.
DeKievit showed her worth in the 200-yard Breaststroke when she earned first place with a time of 2:24.52. Lopez-Aponte, Tease, and Camera took third through fifth with times of 2:11.93, 2:12.39, and 2:12.98.
Nelson, Houwers, and Aarseth came through for the team in the 500-yard Freestyle when they placed second, third, and fourth. Zach, Pullinen, and Robillard placed the same and came in with times of 4:46.98, 4:49.69, and 4:58.49.
Font-Cantarero prevailed in the 100-yard Butterfly which she placed first. Hannig claimed third and DeKievit in sixth, having times of 59.64 and 1:00.46. Seventh placer Lowery trailed Findlay and Wayne State where he was followed by Lund and Boomer.
Events 29 and 30 showcased the 400-yard IM where Billings took second with a solid time of 4:44.07. Behind Wayne State was Houwers where she came in fourth at 4:44.91. Lopez-Aponte, Kapocius, and Pena-Reyes claimed third through fifth where they came out of the water at 4:08.19, 4:10.50, and 4:17.99.
The final event of the UF vs NMU vs WSU meet was the 400-yard Freestyle Relay. Wayne State took the lead, but the Wildcats were .06 behind them with Group A's Nelson, Arbic, Hannig, and Haerr. The men placed third with Group A's LaCount, Khmara, Camera, and Wolmarans coming in at 3:11.63 behind Findlay and Wayne State.
