Notre Dame Scores Late as NMU’s Rally Falls Short in 5-4 Defeat

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Trailing 3-1 in the second period, NMU rallied to tie the game 3-3, but a late power-play goal gave ND the lead back. Each team scored again in the closing minute, but the Irish prevailed for a 5-4 win.

NMU trailed 2-1 after the first period and 3-2 after the second period in the contest. After evening it up, ND finished it off with a power-play goal and an empty net goal. Connor Eddy scored his first career goal with 38 seconds left to make it momentarily interesting, but the Irish held on.

How it Happened
1st Period

The Irish responded as the period was winding down, as Grant Silianoff lit the lamp for his first of the season. Jesse Lansdell assisted. Just over a minute later and playing shorthanded, Solag Bakich got another for Notre Dame. Landon Slaggert assisted as the Fighting Irish quickly jumped ahead 2-1.

The Irish led in shots 13-7. NMU was 0-2 on the man advantage while ND was 0-1.

2nd Period
Notre Dame kept it going in the third, as Ryder Rolston got behind the defense and fired it low left past newly inserted Beni Halasz. NMU trailed 3-1 just 4:41 into the second period.

The 'Cats killed off a very important penalty with a dozen minutes left in the second period to avoid a three-goal deficit.

NMU immediately got one back following the penalty kill, as Artem Shlaine lit the lamp for the third time this year. NMU found themselves down 3-2 with 11 minutes left in the period. Joey Larson and Kristoff Papp got the apples.

That 3-2 score would hold after 40 minutes.

3rd Period
Each team fought off a penalty in the first 10 minutes of the final period, but NMU broke through for the equalizer, as a puck was sent to the net and Andre Ghantous got his stick on it for the redirection into the net.

NMU got a power play immediately following their game-tying goal and found several high-quality looks at the net, but were unable to slide the puck across the line.

The Wildcats were whistled for a trip with 3:04 to go and Notre Dame regained the lead late off the stick of Drew Bavaro. NMU trailed 4-3 with 2:20 left.
