Women's Soccer Continues Four-Match Road Streak

MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan University women's soccer team is on the road again this weekend to take on Saginaw Valley State University and Davenport University in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action. The 'Cats will first play SVSU at Braddock field in University Center, Mich. at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 24. 

Following their game against the Cardinals, NMU will travel to Davenport University to take on the Panthers at 11 a.m. on Sunday, September 26.

 PRESEASON POLL

The Wildcats, coming off a GLIAC Championship match appearance, came in third in the GLIAC Preseason Poll. They notched 49 points and finished five points ahead of Michigan Tech.

 KEY RETURNERS

Senior Caroline Halonen, the 2021 GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year and All-GLIAC First Team honoree, returns to the Wildcats attack. Last season the midfielder was ranked in the top ten in NCAA Division II in several statistic categories. She was second in NCAA Division II in goals (11), fourth in total points (23), and seventh in goals per game (.92).

Sophomore Brooke Pietila is also back for NMU after a season that earned her All-GLIAC Honorable Mention honors. 

Goalkeeper Shenae Kreps returns to the goal for her senior season. Kreps was in net for all eight Wildcat wins and had 27 saves and a .643 save percentage in her first season in Marquette.

 STAT LEADERS

Two Wildcats remain in the top five of the conference in two statistical categories for women's soccer. 

Wildcat Goalkeeper Shenae Kreps is ranked as the No. 2 goalkeeper in the GLIAC with 32 saves in six matches.

Senior Caroline Halonen comes in at No. 2 for shots on goal with 25 in the six matches she's played this season.

 LAST TIME OUT

The Wildcats dropped a match last weekend to the reigning conference champs, Grand Valley State. Tough defense held the Lakers to just one goal in the first half, but the 'Cats fell 4-0.

Caroline Halonen had two shots and goalkeeper Shenae Kreps had four saves.

The Wildcats led several categories against Northwood on Sunday, leading the game in total shots, shots on target, and corners in a 3-0 loss.

 NMU VS SAGINAW VALLEY

NMU and Saginaw Valley State have played 29 matches with the WIldcats holding a lead in the all-time record 15-13-2. The last time the teams met resulted in a 3-2 win for the 'Cats

 NMU VS DAVENPORT

The Wildcats have played the Panthers four times, most recently with a 4-2 win in March of 2021.
