MARQUETTE, Mich. - Two unanswered goals in the first half put the Northern Michigan University men's soccer team (4-9-3, 4-7-2 GLIAC) up early on Senior Day before Upper Iowa University (9-6-1, 6-6-1 GLIAC) came back and won 4-2.
FIRST HALF
The 'Cats dominated the first half in the scoring column as they put up the only goals of the opening 45.
Niko Scheibal scored his first goal of the season in the 37th minute.
Ryan Palmbaum took a free kick after a Peacock foul. The kick went to the top right of the goal area where Scheibal headed the ball into the left corner of the net. Scheibal's goal put NMU up 1-0.
Another goal came for the Wildcats less than four minutes later to put the team up 2-0.
Freshman
Logan Lazar scored his first goal in a Wildcat uniform in the 41st minute. His score was unassisted and was the final goal of the first half.
NMU won the possession battle in the first half with the ball in the Wildcats' control for 59-percent of the time.
SECOND HALF
The Wildcats outshot Upper Iowa 8-6 in the second half and also tallied two shots on goal.
Alex Scott and
Ryan Palmbaum took one shot on target each in the final half of action.
UIU made four goals in the second half and held the 4-2 lead until the final buzzer.
STAT LEADERS
Palmbaum had a team-high four shots and two shots on goal for the 'Cats. He also had an assist in the match.
Niko Scheibal,
Alex Scott, and
Logan Lazar also had shots on goal with Scheibal and Lazar netting goals.
NMU won the possession battle with a total of 57-percent in the match.
Wildcat goalkeeper
Alex Weaver was in net all 90 minutes and grabbed five saves.
