Sunday Match Ends in Tie for Men’s Soccer

MARQUETTE, Mich. – On a windy Sunday in Marquette, the Northern Michigan University men's soccer team (2-7-3, 2-5-2 GLIAC) battled to a 0-0 tie against Saginaw Valley State University in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action.

  FIRST HALF

The NMU defense held stout in the first half as no Cardinal players were able to put a goal in.

Goalkeeper Alex Weaver saved both SVSU shots that came on target in the half.

Two Wildcats got shots off in the first half with Niko Scheibal and Brady Kronenburg adding to the Wildcat stat line.

The score was an even 0-0 after the first 45.

  SECOND HALF

On offense, the 'Cats outshot the Cardinals in the second half 7-6. Kaffie Kurz had a shot on target for the home team in the 52nd minute of action.

NMU also led in corner kicks in the second half as they had two while SVSU tallied one.

Shots from Logan Lazar and Ryan Palmbaum came late in the second but failed to find the net.

Palmbaum led all Wildcats in the second half in shots with a total of two.

Regulation ended with the teams deadlocked at 0-0.

  OVERTIMES

Defense was yet again the name of the game in the first overtime with neither team getting any shots off. The extra period ended without a golden goal so the match moved to a second overtime.

NMU was the only team to get off shots in the second overtime with Palmbaum taking two, Kronenburg taking one on goal, and Isaac Ward taking a single shot.

The Wildcats also had three corner kicks to the Cardinals' one.

When the horn sounded after 110 minutes of action the GLIAC match ended in a 0-0 draw.

  STAT LEADERS

The Wildcats led the match in total shots 13-10 and led in corner kicks 6-3.

Ryan Palmbaum led NMU with four shots that included one shot on goal. Kronenburg was next for the Wildcats with three total shots and a shot on goal.

Kaffie Kurz also took a shot on goal for the home team. A total of eight 'Cats had shots in the match.

In 110 minutes Alex Weaver had four saves. The shutout is the second of the year for NMU's keeper.

  WILDCAT TALK

"I thought the defense was great. We played really well and kept our shape together," said head coach David Poggi. "Some injuries have forced us to play new guys and they did really well."

"This was a good result for us. We are thinking about what we need to do when we face Davenport and Purdue Northwest in our next two matches on the road. Two very important matches because those teams are number one and number two in the conference," concluded Poggi.

  UP NEXT

NMU takes on the aforementioned Panthers of Davenport University Friday at 7 p.m. and the Purdue Univerity Northwest Pride on Sunday at 3 p.m. Both GLIAC matches see the 'Cats on the road.
