Women's Basketball Continues Road Schedule At SVSU And Northwood

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Wildcat women's basketball team is back on the road this weekend for contests against Saginaw Valley State University and Northwood University, January 30-February 1. 

The team first hits SVSU for a 6 p.m. tipoff in Saginaw, Michigan before continuing on to Midland, Michigan for Saturday's contest with Northwood.

The women split the weekend with a victory at Davenport, 52-42, before dropping their contest at Grand Valley State. 

A duo of seniors in Erin Honkala and Jessica Schultz led the way to the Wildcats' victory on Thursday, combining for 36 points, or 18 a piece to lead the charge. Schultz also picked up 13 rebounds in the victory while Elizabeth Lutz tallied two assists for the team lead.

With 48 total rebounds, the women posted 18 points off second chance efforts and had 26 points scored from within the paint, compared to the Panthers' 14.

The team battled once again on Saturday at GVSU. Ranked second in the conference, the Lakers, or Sawyers as they went by for the afternoon matchup, defeated NMU, 58-41. Honkala once again led the team in total points (11) while picking up a team-best seven rebounds in the game as well. 

  NMU VERSUS SAGINAW VALLEY

In 81 all-time meetings, the Wildcats boast a 52-29 record over the Cardinals including wins in their last five meetings. Last season the women swept SVSU with a 66-52 road victory before a 56-35 outing at home to conclude their season series.

Earlier this year the women won a close battle with the Cardinals, claiming a 56-53 victory to stay undefeated on their home court. Honkala and Schultz both contributed 14 points in the victory while Honkala also stripped the ball three times and tallied eight rebounds as well.

  NMU VERSUS NORTHWOOD

The Wildcats own a 48-20 record over Northwood, including a 55-47 victory earlier this year to extend their win-streak over the Timberwolves to three dating back to the 2018-19 season. 

Three women posted double digit points in the win in Honkala (15), Schultz (14) and Makaylee Kuhn (11).
