Helm Named Swimmer of the Year as Women Capture Three Victories and Two Records on Final Day of GLIAC Champs

CLEVELAND, OHIO -  For the second year in a row, junior Rachel Helm (Newcastle, England) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Women's Swimmer of the Year as the Northern Michigan University Women's Swim and Dive team completed their fourth and final day at the GLIAC Championships with three GLIAC titles and two new GLIAC records.

  HELM GETS ANOTHER

Helm completed the 200-yard Backstroke with a GLIAC Championship time of 1:56.21, breaking her own previous GLIAC record, 1:56.38. This was her fourth individual title of the meet.

Also earning points in the 200 Back, was senior Regan Kilburn (Muscatine, Iowa) who touched at 2:01.79 to get fifth place and senior Sara Foucault (Whitewater, Wis.) finished with a time of 5:04.90 for 11th. Senior Becca Arakelian (Livonia, Mich.) touched at 2:08.97 to get points.

  RELAY RECORD

The Wildcats swam a 400-yard Freestyle meet record-breaking relay, which included Helm, sophomore Margaret Vaitkus (Munster, Ind.), Kilburn, and sophomore Lena Soulas (London, England). The team swam a 3:25.05, while the previous record stood at 3:25.45.

  GLIAC CHAMPION

Soulas snagged the third GLIAC title for the women in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 50.59. Also scoring points was Vaitkus who finished ninth with a time of 52.05 and Emma Love (Louisville, Ky.) touching at 54.27 and gaining points for the team.

  ONE MILE LATER...

Sophomore Gabriella Spajic (Sydney, Australia) placed fifth in the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 17:21.33. Junior Nicola Pasquire (Bedford, England) then took 11th at 17:42.87.

  200 BREASTSTROKE

The Wildcats saw sophomore Katharina Springhetti (Tramin, Italy) place sixth with a time of 2:21.16. Senior Dana Stroven (Howell, Mich.) took seventh, touching at 2:25.26. Freshman Briana Arnold (Black Creek, Wis.) finished at 2:26.33 to take 11th.

  POINTS IN DIVING

Senior Angela Probstfeld (White Lake, Mich) took second for the Wildcats, finishing with 461.30 points. Junior Jamie Kimble (Prior Lake, Minn.) follows in sixth with 425.20.

  TEAM RESULTS

The Wildcats finished the meet with 725 points to take third. They finished behind winner Grand Valley State University and Wayne State University, but were nearly 350 points better then fourth place.

  UP NEXT

The Wildcats will now prepare for the NCAA Championships, set to begin Tuesday, March 12 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
