Palmbaum's Hat Trick Lifts Men's Soccer to 4-1 Victory over Upper Iowa

Box Score

FAYETTE, Iowa – Northern Michigan University Men's Soccer got three goals from freshman Ryan Palmbaum (Rocklin, Calif.) in less than four minutes to help guide the Wildcats to a 4-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Upper Iowa University.

  TIE IT UP

UIU scored the first goal of the game. In the 33rd minute, freshman Francisco Espinoza (Buenos Aires, Argentina) found senior Ben Hoffman (Petoskey, Mich.) for his second goal of the season. It was also Espinoza's first career assist.

  TAKING THE LEAD

Palmbaum gave the Wildcats the lead at the 50 minute mark. Senior Lewis Murray (Edinburgh, Scotland) was credited with his second assist of the season on the play.

  ADDING ANOTHER

Just two minutes later, Palmbaum found the net for his second of the game. Soon after a foul by the Peacocks, junior Arni Eiriksson (Akureyi, Iceland) was able to find Palmbaum to move NMU ahead 3-1. It was also Eiriksson's second assist of the season.

  GETTING THE HAT TRICK

It didn't take long for Palmbaum to get the second hat trick in program history as he scored 53:45 into the match. It was his third goal of the game and his fifth goal this season. Palmbaum achieved the hat trick in a total of just 3:45, scoring goals at the 50:00, 52:03 and 53:45 marks.

  STAT LEADERS

The four goals are the most scored by the Wildcats this season. It was the most goals in a match since a 10-0 victory over Viterbo University last season. It is also the most goals in a GLIAC contest since NMU defeated Purdue University Northwest 5-0 in 2018.

The Wildcats outshot the Peacocks 11-6 on the match, led by Palmbaum's four. Junior Vegard Ervall (Trondheim, Norway) had two shots. Espinoza, Hoffman, senior Sveinn Karlsson (Akureyri, Iceland) and freshman Keegan Schmidt (Bettendorf, Iowa) and Quinn Putt (Anoka, Minnesota) all took a shot as well.

In goal, Patrick Restum (Okemos, Mich.) notched two saves.

  UP NEXT

NMU will return to action Sunday afternoon to take on Purdue Northwest for another GLIAC meeting. Earlier in the season the Wildcats bested PNW 3-2 behind three goals from senior Luca Lippert (Langen, Germany), who achieved the team's first-ever hat trick.
