GAME NOTES
Last Time Out:
NMU visited the #2 team in the country, Ferris State University last week but were unable to pull the upset. The Wildcats scored on their second possession to tie the game at 7-7, but a 21-point second quarter from the Bulldogs proved too much to overcome.
Mayon Career High:
Junior Jake Mayon (Plainfield, Mich./Plainfield East) finished the game with 92 receiving yards, creating a new career high. His previous high was 35 yards against Michigan Technical University last season. He also finished with 61 rushing yards and a touchdown. Averaging 133 rushing yards a game, Mayon is currently leading the GLIAC in rushing.
Freshman's First Kick:
Freshman kicker Dalton Ray (Clemont, Fla./Lake Menneola) scored his first field goal Saturday, kicking a 22-yarder in the third quarter.
Van Enkenkort goes back to back with big plays:
Sophomore Cole Van Enkenkort (Green Bay, Wisc./Bay Port) had two big plays back-to-back in the fourth quarter. Van Enkenkort sacked the FSU quarterback for nine yards. He then followed it with his first career interception on the very next play.
Ryan returns for 25 yards:
Senior Pat Ryan (Linden, Mich.) got his first interception of the season and returned it for 25 yards in the third quarter against the Bulldogs. Ryan currently leads the Wildcats with 18 tackles.
GLIAC Tackle Leaders:
The Wildcats feature four players ranked in the Top Five for tackle leaders in the GLIAC. Ryan is tied with NMU junior Demarious Wright (Delray Beach, Fla./Atlantic ) for first place with nine tackles a game. Seniors Darryl Williams (Cooper City, Fla./St. Thomas) and Marlon Harris (Oak Park, Mich./Clawson/Tiffin) are fifth with 8.5 tackles a game.
Troy Mayon recovers the ball:
Sophomore Troy Mayon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) recovered two fumbles Saturday. He recovered and caused a fumble early in the third quarter. He then recovered his second fumble late in the fourth quarter after senior Tyler O'Connor (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton East/Concordia) caused it.
Lewis Throws For Career-High:
Senior Jaranta Lewis (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) threw for a career high in yards last week. Against the Bulldog defense, Lewis completed 16 passes for 167 yards in just his third game at quarterback of his career. Until the final week of 2016, Lewis worked as a receiver, finishing the 2016 season second on the Wildcats with 400 receiving yards.
Davenport last time out:
Davenport enters off a 27-13 loss to GLIAC foe Tiffin University. The loss marks the third straight loss for the Panthers, but did mark their highest offensive point total of the season, as they had scored just six points in their first two games. Davenport scored their first touchdown of the season four seconds into second quarter to tie the game. They also scored on a 43-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter.
As a team, DU has struggled on offense, currently averaging just over 150 yards and eight first downs a game.
