Box Score BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- Northern Michigan University travelled to #2 Ferris State University Saturday night for their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conferencs opener, but were unable to pull the upset.
The Bulldogs scored 21 points in the second quarter on their way to a 42-10 victory.
Junior Jake Mayon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) finished with 153 total yards of offense and a touchdown, picking up 61 yards rushing and 92 yards receiving. Junior Walter Jackson (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Flanagan/Lindenwood) posted 30 yards on four catches. Senior quarterback Jaranta Lewis (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) threw for 167 yards.
Defensively, senior Marlon Harris (Oak Park, Mich./Clawson/Tiffin) notched 14 tackles, while senior Pat Ryan (Linden, Mich.) and sophomore Troy Mayon (Plainfield, Mich./Plainfield East) added 11 each. Senior Darryl Williams (Cooper City, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) tallied nine tackles. Sophomore Cole Van Enkenvort (Green Bay, Wisc./Bay Port) recorded a seven-yard sack and followed with an interception on the next play. Ryan also got a pick, returning his interception 25 yards. Mayon forced and recovered a fumble and also recovered a fumble caused by senior Tyler O'Connor (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton East/Concordia).
Ferris would score early, but the Wildcats answered on the next drive as Mayon punched it in from 2-yards out, and after a freshman Dalton Ray (Clemont, Fla./Lake Menneola) extra point, tied the game at 7-7. However, the Bulldogs would then score four touchdowns to take a 35-7 advantage before Ray kicked a 22-yard field goal in the third quarter to make it 35-10. Another FSU touchdown pushed the score to the 42-10 final.
The Wildcats fall to 0-2 on the season, 0-1 in the GLIAC, while Ferris State improves to 2-0, 1-0 in GLIAC play. NMU will next return to action on Saturday, September 23 in the Superior Dome for their first home game of the season.
