Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Men's Soccer (2-2-1, 0-1 GLIAC) fell to No. 16 Saginaw Valley State University (4-1, 1-0 GLIAC) Friday evening, 3-0, in the first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the season for either team.
The Cardinals wasted little time taking the lead, scoring in the first 10 minutes. At the seven-minute mark, SVSU's Connor Rutz scored his first goal of the season. Less than 20 minutes later, Saginaw Valley went up a pair of scores, taking a 2-0 lead into the half.
NMU was shut down in the second half taking a single shot to SVSU's six. Over the course of the game, the Cardinals outshot the Wildcats 11 to 4. The game's final goal was scored in the 79th minute to put NMU at the three-goal deficit.
Offensively, sophomore midfielder Callum Olpin took a pair of shots for the Wildcats, while junior midfielder Sam Popp (Northville, Michigan) and junior forward Nic Harenda (Waukesha, Wisconsin) each recorded one, both of which were on goal.
In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Filippo Torelli (Parma, Italy) dropped to 2-2-1 on the season after facing five shots on goal, also making a pair of saves.
Sunday Afternoon, the Wildcats will host Northwood University (2-2-1, 0-0 GIAC) at 1 p.m.
