MARQUETTE, Mich. — Saginaw Valley State edged the Northern Michigan women's basketball team, 62-60, Thursday night at the Berry Events Center.

The GLIAC North leading Cardinals held off the Wildcats' comeback bid to move to 19-4 (15-2 GLIAC) on the season.

With 4:59 remaining in regulation, a Halee Nieman three-point shot gave Saginaw Valley State a 60-52 advantage. Northern Michigan responded, with Erin Honkala making a layup and Tess Weatherly draining a three-point shot to make it a three-point game by the 3:57 mark.

A Darby Youngstrom layup made it a one-basket game, at 61-59, with 1:01 left on the clock. Bre Gaspervich went to the free-throw line with two seconds remaining, but ultimately only sank one.

Katelyn Carriere iced the game by making one of her two free throws with one second left on the clock.

Northern Michigan led, 32-29, at halftime after Gaspervich sank a pair of free throws with no time left on the clock. The Cardinals held a slim 49-48 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

The game featured 10 ties and 11 lead changes. Northern Michigan shot 44.7 percent from the floor, 50 from three and 83.3 from the charity stripe.

Youngstrom led the Wildcats with 20 points and seven rebounds. Her 20 points is a new career high.

Taylor Hodell came off the bench to chip in 14 points. Saginaw Valley State's Emily Wendling finished with 25 points while two other starters scored in the double digits.

Northern Michigan, now 15-9 (10-7 GLIAC), hosts Wayne State on Saturday at 11 a.m. in its final home game of the season. Free tickets can be picked up at Art Van Furniture.
