Box Score ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Wildcats led in number of plays and time of possession, but Northern Michigan University was unable to pull out an upset as the Wildcats fell to the #19 ranked Grand Valley State University Lakers in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
Freshman Dalton Ray (Clemont, Fla./Lake Menneola) kicked a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter to narrow the deficit 7-3, but GVSU responded with three unanswered touchdowns to win the contest 28-3.
Junior Jake Mayon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) finished with 98 yards rushing, and added five catches for 41 yards to lead the Wildcats. Freshman Deandre Caldwell (Kankakee, Ill.) added 58 rushing yards.
Freshman quarterback Ryan Johnson (De Pere, Wisc./Ashwaubenon) threw for 184 yards. Senior Jaranta Lewis (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) and redshirt freshman Dan Van Effen (Escanaba, Mich.) finished tied for the team's lead with 42 yards receiving. Van Effen tied Mayon with five receptions on the day.
Defensively, senior Pat Ryan (Linden, Mich.) posted 14 tackles and an interception. Sophomore Troy Mayon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) added eight tackles and joined senior Darryl Williams (Cooper City, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), and freshman Marcus Kidd (University Park, Ill./Crete-Monee) with a fumble recovery.
NMU will look to rebound next Saturday as they visit Wayne State University for another GLIAC tilt.
