Box Score TIFFIN, Ohio — The Northern Michigan men's soccer team handed No. 12 Tiffin its first loss of the season Friday afternoon at the Paradiso Complex.
The Wildcats downed the Dragons, who entered the contest 6-0, by a 2-1 score thanks to an 87th minute goal by Edgar Astorga.
Northern Michigan jumped out to the lead in the 16th minute when Ívar Árnason found Sveinn Karlsson on the left side of the field with a cross. Karlsson beat Cary Wilson cleanly to extend his point streak to two games.
The Dragons evened the score early in the second half. After a Dragon shot was blocked in front, Michael McPeek collected the ball and sent a shot past Brin Lapuh from roughly 35 yards out.
The rest of the match was fast and physical. Overall, the teams combined to take 22 shots, with eight on target, and rack up nine yellow cards and 28 fouls.
Astorga finally broke though after the Wildcats were unable to capitalize on three-straight corner kicks. Awarded a free kick deep in Dragon territory, Nic Harenda fed Astorga in the middle of the box for the game-winning goal.
Northern Michigan held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goals, with Astorga and Karlsson posting two each. Filippo Torelli, who came on in relief of Lapuh after Tiffin's goal, picked up his first career victory.
In the past two games, Karlsson has tallied seven points (2g-3a).
With their victory, their second in a row, the Wildcats improve to 2-4 (2-3 GLIAC). They return to action Sunday when they face Findlay at noon.
