Gaspervich Double-Double Lifts Wildcats Past Bulldogs, 59-49

MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan women's basketball team downed Ferris State, 59-49, behind Bre Gaspervich's double-double performance.

With the win, the Wildcats move to 10-13 (9-8 GLIAC) on the season. Gaspervich led Northern Michigan with a career-high 27 points and added 12 rebounds and three steals. Kendall Martenet netted eight points and pulled down six rebounds.

The Wildcats opened the contest with a 5-0 run highlighted by a Gaspervich triple for the first points of the game. Ferris State battled back to take its first lead of the game, 8-6, following a Katie Mavis jump shot, but Northern Michigan held a 15-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Mavis tied the game at 15 for the Bulldogs at the 8:26 mark. Later in the quarter, Northern Michigan went on an 7-0 run highlighted by a Gaspervich beating the shot clock for a long three. The run created a 26-18 advantage and the largest lead of the half for the Wildcats. Northern Michigan led Ferris State at the intermission, 28-23.

Ferris State came out of the locker room with an 10-2 run to take a 33-30 lead with 5:53 on the clock. Later in the quarter, Northern Michigan put together an 11-3 run of its own to end the quarter. Following a Sydney Dillinger steal, Chloe Tompkins found Gaspervich on the perimeter for three to close the quarter. The Wildcats led the Bulldogs, 43-36, after three quarters of play.

The Bulldogs opened the final quarter by chipping down the Northern Michigan lead to three, at 45-42, with 8:09 to play. Northern Michigan answered by growing its lead back up to 10, at 52-42, after Dillinger connected with Gaspervich for the triple with 5:40 on the clock.

Ferris State cut the lead back down to six, at 55-49, after a Margo Brown three with 1:59 remaining. On the following possession, Gaspervich was able to avoid a Ferris State double team to find Martenet in the paint for the layup to put the game out of reach.

Over the last past three games, Gaspervich has averaged 20.3 points, shooting 55.6 from behind the three-point arc.

The Wildcats will return to action when they travel to Saginaw Valley State Feb. 11 with tip off set for 6 p.m.
