Wildcat Hockey Dropped by Michigan Tech

Box Score

HOUGHTON, Mich. — The Northern Michigan hockey team was downed by Michigan Tech, 2-0, Friday night at the John MacInness Student Ice Arena.

Angus Redmond made 19 saves to blank the Wildcats in his first collegiate start and outduel Atte Tolvanen, who finished with 35 stops.

Michigan Tech took a 1-0 lead at 8:28 by taking advantage of the game's first power play. After Tolvanen dove to direct a Joel L'Esperance shot wide, Jake Lucchini came up with the puck at the bottom of the right circle and snapped it just inside the right post.

Tolvanen finished the first period with 18 saves. One of his more impressive stops came on Cliff Watson around the 13-minute mark. Watson muscled his way past the Wildcat defense and lofted a backhander on net, which Tolvanen calmly sent to the boards.

The second period was more even, with each team taking six shots on net. And, in the final two minutes, each had a quality scoring opportunity. First, on a two-on one, Chris Gerrie sent a pass over to Shane Hanna on the left wing, but Tolvanen read the play and got a pad on Hanna's shot.

Then, with just 49 seconds left on the clock, Robbie Payne sent a drop pass back to a trailing James Vermeulen. Vermeulen rifled a shot on net that banged off the crossbar and out of harm's way.

The Huskies limited the Wildcats to just five shots in the final frame. Jake Jackson completed the game's scoring at 16:16, stripping a Wildcat of the puck along the boards, skating in on net and then sliding the puck under Tolvanen's pads.

Northern Michigan had a power play to close the game. On that man advantage, Redmond managed to fight off a screen to deflect Jordan Klimek's point shot to the netting.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 2-4-1 (1-3-1 WCHA). They return to action tomorrow night when they host the Huskies at 7:07 p.m.

NOTES: Northern Michigan leads the all-time series, 69-58-14 ... This was Tolvanen's 16th-career 30-save effort ... Dominik Shine and Vermeulen each made his season debut ... Troy Loggins tied Watson for the game-high with five shots.
