Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan volleyball team fell to Michigan Tech, 3-0, Tuesday night at Vandament Arena in front of season-best 390 fans.
The Huskies topped the Wildcats in the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-17, before clinching their victory with a tight 25-23 win in the third set.
"I'm pretty happy with Kayla, Madison and Jami," head coach Dominic Yoder said. "Kayla and Madison led us offensively, and Jami's setting drove our offense. I thought our block was good halfway through set two and in set three to keep us in the game. We need to be more consistent with that moving forward. But hat's off to Michigan Tech for coming into a hostile environment and doing really well."
In the first set, Michigan Tech never allowed Northern Michigan to get within two points after building an early lead. In the second, the Huskies raced out to a 10-4 advantage and never looked back.
The third set featured the teams trading points. The Wildcats and Huskies were locked in a tie seven times, but Michigan Tech pulled ahead late by going on a 7-3 run when the teams were knotted at 12 apiece. After that, though the Wildcats rallied late with Alex Berger serving to pull within one, the Huskies sealed the win on a Stephanie Dietrich kill.
Madison Whitehead paced the Northern Michigan attack with 11 kills and a .435 hitting percentage. Kayla Chosa was next with 10 kills and a .350 hitting percentage.
Defensively, Berger (17), Autumn Monsma (12) and Lisa Studnicka (11) reached the double digits in digs. Jami Hogeboom posted 39 assists to lead the Wildcats.
With the loss, Northern Michigan falls to 10-4 (2-3 GLIAC). The Wildcats return to action when they travel to Hillsdale Friday at 7 p.m.
