Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan volleyball team dispatched Lake Superior State, 3-0, to earn its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory of the season Saturday afternoon at Vandament Arena in front of 294 fans.
After the Wildcats won the first sets by tight 25-18 and 27-25 margins, they dismantled the Lakers in the third, 25-6, at one point going on an 11-1 run with Alex Berger serving.
"It was a good team win for us to get back on track for this upcoming weekend," head coach Dominic Yoder said. "We reduced our errors, especially in serving, and that placed pressure on our opponents."
As a team, Northern Michigan recorded a .337 hitting percentage, its second highest of the season. The Wildcats limited the Lakers to a .084 hitting percentage, holding them at -.261 in the third set.
Offensively, Northern Michigan was led by Madison Whitehead and Lisa Studnicka, who each posted a hitting percentage north of .400. Whitehead led all players with 13 kills and a .478 hitting percentage while Studnicka posted eight kills and a .400 hitting percentage.
Jami Hogeboom posted a game-high 34 assists while Berger was the lone player to reach the double digits in digs, recording 12.
It was the fourth time the Wildcats won in three sets this season, and their victory elevated their record to 9-2 (1-1 GLIAC). The Lakers fell to 0-6 (0-2 GLIAC) with the loss.
Northern Michigan continues its five-game homestand, hosting Lake Erie Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. and Ashland Sept. 26 at 4 p.m.
