Box Score FAYETTE, IOWA — The Northern Michigan volleyball team picked up its second victory at the Peacock Open, topping host Upper Iowa, 3-1, Friday night at Dorman Gymnasium in front of 190 fans.
"The team played unbelievable floor defense tonight," head coach Dominic Yoder said. "It's great to start the tournament 2-0, and we're excited to get back on the court tomorrow."
The Wildcats won the first two sets, 25-17 and 29-27, before dropping the third, 25-18. They rebounded to make quick work of the Peacocks in the fourth set with a 25-14 victory. With the win, they improve to 5-1 (0-0 GLIAC).
Jami Hogeboom posted a career-high 52 assists while Kayla Chosa paced the Northern Michigan attack with 17 kills and a .371 hitting percentage.
"Kayla and Jami had outstanding performances," Yoder said. "I'm also very proud of our defenders."
Five Wildcats reached the double digits in kills: Alex Berger (20), Lisa Studnicka (18), Meghan Seymour (15) and Autumn Monsma (12) and Hogeboom (11). As a team, Northern Michigan averaged 19.75 digs per sets, totaled 14 blocks and held Upper Iowa to a .136 hitting percentage.
The Wildcats and Peacocks last met Sept. 5 at the Wildcat Open. Upper Iowa outlasted Northern Michigan in a back-to-back five set contest, earning a 3-2 victory.
The Wildcats return to action tomorrow when they take on South Dakota School of Mines (12 p.m.) and Minot State (6 p.m.).
