Box Score DETROIT — The Northern Michigan volleyball team swept Wayne State Friday night at the Matthaei Center in front of 265 fans.
After emerging victorious in a tight first set, 25-21, the Wildcats made quick work of the Warriors in the next two, winning by 25-18 and 25-15 margins.
"This was a good team win for us tonight," head coach Dominic Yoder said. "Jami Hogeboom set a well-balanced offense, and our middles Bridget Bussell and Kayla Chosa played very well."
In the decisive third set, with the teams knotted at 12 apiece, Northern Michigan went on a 13-3 run to close out Wayne State and earn its third-straight victory. During that run, Madison Whitehead notched three kills and Chosa posted two blocks.
The Wildcats opened the match by running out to a quick 3-0 lead. The Warriors battled back to tie the game at four apiece, and the teams began to trade points from that point on. Northern Michigan ultimately built a two-point cushion, taking a 13-11 edge, and then never allowed Wayne State to tie the game again.
In the second set, the Wildcats used a late 15-8 run to down the Warriors. In that set, Northern Michigan held Wayne State to a .128 hitting percentage.
Whitehead paced the Wildcats with 11 kills, while Chosa and Bussell each recorded eight kills and a hitting percentage north of .500. Defensively, Northern Michigan was led by Alex Berger, who posted 22 digs. Four different Wildcats recorded a solo block in the contest.
"Whitehead led us offensively," Yoder said. "Our seniors Lisa Studnicka and Berger got it done defensively. Berger's 22 digs were one of the key components of our win."
The sweep was Northern Michigan's ninth of the season and fifth in GLIAC play. The Wildcats have only been blanked once themselves in 2015.
With the win, Northern Michigan improves to 19-8 (8-7 GLIAC). The Wildcats return to the court tomorrow when they face Saginaw Valley State in University Center, Mich. at 2 p.m.
