Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan women's soccer team downed Michigan Tech, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the NMU Soccer Field in front of 211 fans.
"It was a good game against a quality Michigan Tech team today," said head coach Matt Granstrand. "I'm proud of my team and their effort and happy for my two seniors."
The Wildcats and Huskies traded shots on net throughout the first half of play. Lexi Herrewig was able to score off of a pass from Jannelle Riedl to put Michigan Tech ahead, 1-0, at the halfway point.
Carmen Villarruel wasted no time evening the score in the second half when she was able score off of a Paula Hafner pass in the 48th minute of play. Allyssa Milam was able to convert a Hafner corner kick into the game-winning goal in the 69th minute of play.
Alexandra Simmons came up with two saves late in the game to nullify the Huskies' attempt to tie the game. Overall, she posted seven saves in the contest.
Michigan Tech outshot Northern Michigan, 14-11. The Wildcats had the advantage in corner kicks, 6-4.
With the win, Northern Michigan moves to 7-9 (7-5 GLIAC) on the season and clinches the fifth seed in the GLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament. The Wildcats will travel to fourth-seeded Ohio Dominican Nov. 4.
