Box Score HOUGHTON, Mich. — The Northern Michigan hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 16 Michigan Tech Saturday night at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
The Huskies scored three goals in the first eight minutes of the second period to down the Wildcats, who fall to 2-2-2 (1-1-0 WCHA) with the loss.
Despite being outshot, 17-6, in the first period, the Wildcats found the scoresheet first when Darren Nowick fed John Siemer near the middle of the circle. Siemer skated in and sent a shot past Jamie Phillips stick side.
The Huskies had a flurry of chances in close on a power play with 3:50 on the clock, but Atte Tolvanen was able to make the initial save and then sweep away a rebound after a Husky rang the pipe.
With 2:27 on the clock, Nowick sprung Brock Maschmeyer on a breakaway with the Wildcats short by two men. Maschmeyer made a move to fake Phillips out of the net but was tripped up by Malcolm Gould before he could get a shot off.
In the second period, the Huskies quickly built a 3-1 advantage. After tying the game at one less than two minutes into the frame, Michigan Tech took advantage of two-straight power plays to pull ahead and then held Northern Michigan scoreless the rest of the way.
The Wildcats return to the ice next weekend when they host Bemidji State for a two-game series.
