Box Score BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — The Northern Michigan women's soccer team extended its win streak to five games with a 1-0 overtime win over Ferris State Friday afternoon at the FSU soccer field in front of 400 fans.
"I'm proud of my team and the way they compete," head coach Matt Granstrand said. "I thought we played a great game against a well-coached and very talented Ferris team."
The Wildcats and Bulldogs battled through two scoreless halves of play. Paula Hafner was able to spring free for a shot on net in the 17th minute of play only to be denied by Bulldog goaltender Maddie Haustein. The game would require extra minutes to decide a winner.
The Wildcats wasted no time in the extra frame to find offense. Hafner would get a shot off in the 92nd minute only to hit the cross bar. That shot was then deflected into the net by Carmen Villarruel.
The Wildcats held the edge in both shots, 15-14, and corner kicks, 7-4. Alexandra Simmons remained solid in the net for Northern Michigan, posting three saves. Haustein posted seven saves of her own.
With the win, the Wildcats move to 5-7 (5-3 GLIAC) on the season. They return to action when they face Grand Valley State Sunday at noon.
