Box Score FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- The No. 19-ranked Northern Michigan University hockey team gave up three goals in the second period, including two power play goals, as the Wildcats dropped their opening game in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series at Alaska Friday.
NMU is now 7-3-1 overall with a 4-3-1 WCHA record. The Nanooks improved to 7-6-0 with a 2-5-0 record in league play.
Alaska's Tyler Morley scored the first goal of the game on assists from Kyle Froese and Garrick Patrick at the 1:20 mark of the second period. The Nanooks then scored two goals on the power play to take a 3-0 advantage.
Alaska's Marcus Basara scored on assists from Morley and Trevor Campbell at the 14:58 mark of the second before Colton Parayko scored with just nine seconds left in the period on assists from Morley and Basara.
NMU was outshot 27-18 in the contest, sophomore forward Darren Nowick led the Wildcats with four shots in the contest.
Sophomore goalie Mathias Dahlstrom played the first two periods in net for the Wildcats, making 18 saves en route to his third loss of the season. Junior goalie Michael Doan played the third period and saved all six shots faced.
The Nanooks were 2-2 on the power play while NMU was 0-3.
The Wildcats complete their series agains the Nanooks on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 11:07 p.m. (ET).
