PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Northern Michigan University volleyball team was defeated in its first match of the day on Saturday (Sept. 7) at the University of West Florida Invite. Missouri Science and Technology won 3-2 over the Wildcats.

The Miners took the first set, 25-15. NMU came back to take the next two by a score of 25-18 in each set. Missouri S&T came ahead in set four (25-23) to send it into a tie breaker, in which the Miners won 15-9.

The seniors led on the court for the Wildcats with Lina Lopes (17), Kalli Herron (14) and Sarah Hamilton (11) tallying kills in the double digits. Sophomore Alex Berger had 19 digs, while freshman Meghan Supple added 15 and Lopes with 13. Herron also contributed with five service aces on the afternoon. Senior Kellisha Harley finished with 40 assists.

Hayley Wright led the Miners with 12 kills, with Krista Haslag (10) right behind her. Cydney Denning led the digs column with 24, Wright added 14 and Allie Plunk had 12. Plunk set up the offense, finishing with 36 assists.

The Wildcats finish up play at the Invite this evening as they take on host team, West Florida at 8 p.m. A video stream of the match will be available.
