Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. – After shutting out Saginaw Valley State on Friday evening, the Northern Michigan University volleyball team continued its sweep of Homecoming by shutting out Lake Superior State, 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-15) on Saturday (Sept. 21) afternoon from Vandament Arena. NMU is now 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
In set one, the Wildcats jumped out of the gates with a 10-2 lead, five of those consecutive points came on senior Lina Lopes' serve, including two service aces. The Wildcats held its lead by seven or more points in the remainder of the set. Senior Sarah Hamilton led with five kills in the set.
The tables turned in the second set as NMU was up 3-2 and wouldn't lead again until the tail end of the set. There were nine ties in set two. LSSU led 19-17 before the Wildcats scored the next seven points on sophomore Alex Berger's serve to give NMU the 24-19 lead. An attack error on the Lakers gave NMU the victory and 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Berger began set three the same way she ended set two, scoring six points on her serve, including two aces to give NMU the 6-0 lead. The Wildcats didn't allow LSSU to come within less than four points for the set to clinch the shut out.
Senior Kalli Herron had a match-high 12 kills on the afternoon while Hamilton added 10 and Lopes eight. NMU finished with 41 total kills for a .366 attack percentage. Hamilton also had six block assists, as the Wildcats finished with 16 total blocks. Senior Suzy Solin led NMU on the defense with 10 digs. Senior Kellisha Harley finished with 31 assists to setup the offense.
For the Lakers (0-6, 0-2 GLIAC), Emily Snyder led with six kills. LSSU had 25 total kills and a .048 attack percentage. Meghan Drobish led with 11 digs and Janelle Nagy had 21 assists.
The Wildcats continue play at home next weekend against Lake Erie on Friday (Sept. 27) at 7 p.m. and Ashland on Saturday (Sept. 28) at 4 p.m.
