Box Score 2 MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team wrapped up the Superior Oasis Wildcat Open with a perfect 4-0 record after a 3-0 sweep over Lake Superior State on Saturday (Sept. 14) evening from Vandament Arena. The Wildcats won the tournament with the victory.
The set scores were 25-14, 25-23 and 25-18. NMU opened set one with the first three points of the match to gain momentum. The Wildcats kept its lead for the entire set, not allowing the Lakers to get closer than four points.
Northern held the lead for the first half of the set two. With NMU leading 12-9, the Lakers scored the next three points to tie. From there, LSSU would stay with five points for the remainder of the set. With NMU up 24-23, and after the Lakers scored the previous two points, the Wildcats held on for the win on a kill by senior Kalli Herron from senior Kellisha Harley.
The Lakers stormed out of the gates in the third set, taking a 5-1 lead. The home team tied it up at six and built a four-point lead at 13-9. The 'Cats closed out the match with a block solo from freshman Bridget Bussell and a kill by Herron.
Herron had a match-high 11 kills while senior Sarah Hamilton added 10. The Green and Gold finished with 39 total kills for a .348 attack percentage. Senior Lina Lopes had nine digs on the night and added six kills. Harley set up the offense with 32 assists.
For the Lakers, Jen Marren tallied eight kills while Gabrielle Olsen and Emily Snyder added seven apiece. Janelle Nagy and Emily Snyder each had eight digs.
The Wildcats play three matches next week, beginning at UW-Parkside on Tuesday (Sept. 17) in a non-conference matchup with the Rangers. NMU begins Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend as Saginaw Valley State and LSSU come to Vandament Arena during Homecoming.
