Volleyball Plays Three Matches this Week

MARQUETTE, Mich. – After a split at home over the weekend, the Northern Michigan University volleyball team closes out regular season home play on Tuesday (Nov. 5) before travelling to the Lower Peninsula for two matches. The Wildcats host Michigan Technological University at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (Nov. 5) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. GLIAC play continues on Friday (Nov. 8) at Hillsdale at 7 p.m. and at Northwood on Saturday (Nov. 9) at 4 p.m.

NMU is 18-8 overall and 11-2 in the GLIAC entering the week and has 5 regular season matches remaining. The Wildcats were defeated, 3-0 ,on Friday (Nov. 1) by Grand Valley State before bouncing back to shut out Ferris State, 3-0, on Saturday (Nov. 2) in two home matches.

Senior Lina Lopes leads NMU and is third in the GLIAC with 305 kills on the season. Seniors Kalli Herron (281) and Sarah Hamilton (245) both total over 200 kills on the year. Sophomore Alex Berger leads the defense with 312 digs while Lopes adds 264. Senior Kellisha Harley sets up the offense with 934 assists.

The Huskies are 9-16 overall and 5-8 in conference play this season. MTU also faced FSU and GVSU over the weekend at home, falling in both matches. The Bulldogs took Friday's match 3-1 and the Lakers claimed the 3-0 shut out on Saturday. For MTU, Sylvie Rokosh leads with 221 kills and Kendall Ward has 203. Jacqueline Aird leads with 341 digs, Rachel Pohlod has 281 and Madeline Haben adds 250. Haben controls the offense with 915 assists.

The Wildcats lead the all-time series 79-16 over the Huskies, which also includes taking the last seven straight meetings. The two teams faced each other this season on Oct. 1 in Houghton, Mich., where the Wildcats won 3-1. In the match, Lopes had 13 kills and 10 digs. Herron added 15 kills, while Berger added 11 digs.

Hillsdale (14-10, 9-4 GLIAC) enters the week after sweeping its road games over the weekend. On Friday, the Chargers came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Saginaw Valley State, 3-2, and swept Lake Superior State, 3-0, on Saturday. Emily Wofert leads Hillsdale with 231 kills on the season. Caitlin Kopmeyer has 293 digs and Sydney Lenhart has 260. NMU is 34-12 over the Chargers in the all-time series. Last season, NMU defeated Hillsdale, 3-1, in Marquette.

Northwood (17-7, 10-3 GLIAC) took both of its conference matches on the road on the weekend. On Friday, the Timberwolves defeated Lake Superior State, 3-0, and Saginaw Valley, 3-1, on Saturday. Julia Pakhomenko leads her team and the GLIAC in kills with 440. Elizabeth Barker has 390 digs while Krysta Kramer (273), Jordan Dunn (251), Brita Bjornsdottir (237) and Pakhomenko (236) each tally over 200 digs for the season. The Wildcats hold the 35-24 advantage in the all-time series against Northwood. However, the Timberwolves took the matchup, 3-0 last season in Marquette.
