  • Joined the coaching staff of the Detroit Lions in 1974, the Atlanta Falcons in 1977, the Buffalo Bills in 1983 and was named defensive coordinator of the Houston Oilers a year later
  • On January 20, 1986, was named the Oilers Head Coach, becoming the first NMU alumnus to serve as head coach of an NFL team
