Coached by Glenn Brown, who was named the Mid-Continent Conference Coach of the Year in 1980, Northern's 1 men's basketball teams went 24-6 in 1979-80 and 21-9 in 1980-81, making an NCAA Quarterfinal appearance each year. Mark Mindeman and Ernie Montgomery were named to the Mid-Continent Conference First Team in both 1980 and 1981, while Eric Posey was named to the Second Team in 1981. Mindeman and Montgomery were also named All-NABC District Second Team All-Americans in 1981.
