After a five-year playing career and serving as a student assistant this past season, former Northern Michigan volleyball standout Lauren Van Remortel was hired as a full-time assistant coach in March of 2025.
Van Remortel played for the Green and Gold from 2019-23, where she accumulated 4,506 assists over 124 career matches as the team's setter, putting her at second all-time in career assists.
From Carmel, Indiana, Van Remortel helped lead the Wildcats to a GLIAC regular season and tournament title as a sophomore in 2020. Playing in all 17 matches, she led the team in assists with 749 while adding 18 aces, 35 kills, 139 digs, and 18 total blocks. She was named to the All-GLIAC First Team and the All-Tournament Team. She then earned All-GLIAC Second Team honors in 2022, leading the team in assists with 1,134, which was good for second best in the GLIAC. She also added 222 digs and 19 blocks that season.Â
Van Remortel recorded over 1,000 assists in 2019 and 2022, putting her on an exclusive list of only nine players in program history to accomplish that feat two separate times throughout their career. She is also the only player in program history to record 700+ assists in at least four seasons, doing it in each of her five years as a Wildcat.Â
A four-time member of the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team, Van Remortel graduated in 2024 with her degree in Elementary Special Education.Â
