Casey Thousand was named Northern Michigan University’s head women’s basketball coach in May 2022. In just four seasons, Thousand has transformed Northern Michigan into one of the premier programs in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and the NCAA Division II Midwest Region.
Under her leadership, the Wildcats have compiled an 85-40 overall record, produced three consecutive 20-win seasons, earned three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and advanced to the NCAA Round of 32 twice. Beyond the wins, Thousand has built a culture centered on academic excellence, community engagement, and the holistic development of her student-athletes.
The 2025-26 season added another chapter to Northern Michigan's resurgence. The Wildcats posted a 25-8 record, the program's highest win total since the 1999-2000 season, and secured a third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Individual honors reflected the team's success, with Jacy Weisbrod and Sarah Newcomer earning First Team All-GLIAC recognition and Sydney Whitehouse being named the GLIAC Sixth Woman of the Year.
In 2024-25, Northern posted a 23-9 record, including a 15-5 mark in GLIAC play, earning the conference tournament’s No. 2 seed while tying the program’s highest win total since 2000-01. The Wildcats opened the season 8-0, their best start in 25 years, advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 with a victory over Hillsdale, and recorded four conference wins by 30 or more points—the program’s most in at least five seasons. Weisbrod earned D2CCA All-Midwest Region Second Team and All-GLIAC First Team honors, Abi Fraaza was named GLIAC Sixth Woman of the Year, and Newcomer received All-GLIAC Second Team recognition. Thousand was also honored as Northern Michigan University’s Coach of the Year at the 2025 Wildcat Awards.
During the 2023-24 season, Thousand guided the Wildcats to a 22-10 record and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2019. Northern advanced to the NCAA Round of 32 with a victory over Kentucky Wesleyan and reached the GLIAC Tournament Championship game after upsetting nationally ranked Ferris State in the semifinals. Makaylee Kuhn earned First Team All-GLIAC honors, Weisbrod was named to the Second Team, and Ana Rhude received All-Defensive Team recognition.
Thousand made an immediate impact in her first season (2022-23), leading Northern to a 15-13 record—the program’s highest win total in four years. The Wildcats earned the No. 4 seed in the GLIAC Tournament and hosted a conference quarterfinal game. Off the court, Northern placed 10 student-athletes on the GLIAC All-Academic Team while earning the department’s Community Engagement Award.
Before returning to Marquette, Thousand spent three successful seasons as head coach at the University of Illinois Springfield, where the Prairie Stars improved each season under her leadership. In 2021-22, UIS finished 17-11, the program’s best record in 23 years, while setting a school record with 11 GLVC victories. The Prairie Stars hosted and won a conference tournament game, defeated Division I Bradley on the road, and produced multiple All-GLVC performers. Her teams also posted the highest cumulative GPA in program history while consistently earning conference academic recognition.
Thousand previously served on Northern Michigan’s coaching staff from 2016-19, first as an assistant coach before being promoted to associate head coach. During that stretch, the Wildcats compiled a 55-36 record, reached the 2019 GLIAC Championship game, and advanced to the NCAA Midwest Regional semifinals. She also served as an adjunct professor in NMU’s Department of Health and Human Performance and advised the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Prior to Northern, Thousand was the head coach at Edgewood College from 2009-16, leading the Eagles to four conference tournament appearances while mentoring numerous all-conference student-athletes. Earlier coaching stops included assistant coaching positions at Carthage College and MacMurray College, where she contributed to successful programs.
A four-time All-LMC honoree at Lakeland College, Thousand played a key role in leading the Muskies to three conference championships, an undefeated conference season, and an NCAA Tournament appearance during her senior campaign. She graduated from Lakeland College in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sports and Facility Management and a minor in Business. She later earned a Master of Education in Leadership from Carthage College in 2009 and completed Cornell University's Women in Leadership Certificate Program in 2021.
Known for building winning cultures and developing student-athletes on and off the court, Thousand has Northern Michigan as a perennial championship contender while preparing young women for success long after their playing careers have ended.
