PREVIEW: Swim & Dive Opens Season at St. Cloud

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The 2026-27 swim & dive season is officially here, as NMU heads to Minnesota to open the regular season.

"I'm excited for St. Cloud this weekend," added head coach Heidi Voigt in her mid-week media availability. "Their men are always so good, and they're in our conference. The women are in the Northern Sun Conference, but they're always strong, too. We battle with them pretty head-to-head, so I'm excited to see what this weekend looks like."

The Wildcats have two sessions over the weekend, beginning with an evening session that starts at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, October 2, before concluding with an 11 a.m. ET morning session on Saturday, October 3. Both meets are available to stream through MidcoSports Plus.

After an intrasquad exhibition match on September 19, 2026, head coach Voigt and the 'Cats are excited to get back into the pool and swim against competition. During her first weekly media availability of the season, head coach Voigt laid out the landscape of her squad heading into the weekend.

"I would say on the men's side, we definitely have a young team. We have nine returners and 14 new faces. So, there's a lot of a learning curve, but we do have great captain leadership. I'm also pretty excited to see how our men divers do; we have three guys that this is their final year with us and are all looking really good, so I'm pretty excited about Diego Carillo, Ryan Foucault, and Benaiah Schnurstein. And then on the swimming side, there is good leadership by Alessandro Rosatelli and Gabriel Fulconi, and they're looking pretty great. And of course we have our [2026] GLIAC Freshman and GLIAC Swimmer of the Year Matteo Ballardin back, and he's been looking good in the water, too. So we're excited to see where they go and how they lead this young group.

"On the women's side, we have again all great returning divers. Kalina Ceglinski is back, and Lilian Marx is healthy and ready to go. Josie Bossen as well, and we have Riley Hummel and Grace Daly, and they're looking really good. So, I'm excited to see what they do this weekend as well. We have good leadership also on the women's side in terms of Sophia Moore as a returning captain and Abigail Keen. They're leading our team, but good freshman faces coming in too... I'm excited to see what happens; with so many new faces, you don't really know what to expect all the time, like to see who comes through in battle situations, so that'll be fun."

With the first meet being on the road, head coach Voigt noted that she can start getting her team not only used to the taxing road schedule to prepare for postseason down the stretch, but the first meet will also act as a look into the beginning of hashing out who will fit into what events on any given meet day.

"I think right now, with so many events, we're still trying to figure out where everything fits with our relays, and we're going to be playing a lot with relay order, different strokes, and who can do what events: who can do closer back-to-back events, who needs a bigger rest in between events, who can recover faster, that kind of thing. So, in teaching them all the road stuff like how they need to warm up and warm down, how they need to fuel themselves, when to cheer and when to take care of themselves to get ready for the next race. I think all of that's important."
