Wildcats Settle For 1-1 Draw against Davenport

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The NMU men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw against the Davenport Panthers to complete its GLIAC season opening weekend.

The Wildcats (4-2-1, 1-0-1 GLIAC) got a first-half goal from Luca Rosen, who finished off a tick-tack-toe play from Sergio Cano Castro and Ian Weimer, giving the 'Cats a one-goal advantage and outshooting the Panthers 6-2 in the opening frame.

With the goal, Rosen now has 42 career points, where he stands alone as the leading points-getter in NMU men's soccer history. Rosen had six shot attempts, with four of those on the frame.

Cano Castro (1-5--7) notched his fifth assist of the season and fourth in three games, while Weimer (1-4--6) added his fourth assist and sixth point in three games.

The Panthers (1-3-3, 0-1-1 GLIAC) earned its first conference point when Dugan Black headed in a free-kick delivery from Archie Oliver in the dying moments of the first half. The Panthers survived the Wildcat surge in the second half, including a Davenport goal-line clearance, three corner kicks, and two shots in the final two minutes of the match.

In the match, the Wildcats outshot the Panthers 12-4, but only managed five on frame to DU's three. Ethan Engle was shown a red card in the 69th minute, and both Jack Henderson and Jordy Rodrigues were shown yellow cards for the Panthers. Noah Preston-Watkins was booked for the Wildcats. 

Asaf Kristal made two saves in his full ninety minutes played. Marcos Gallardo Rozano, Xhoel Lutaj, Davian Gumbs, Isaac Cervantes, and Rosen all recorded 90-minute shifts. James Carr (81), Tyler Kowalczyk (79), and Cano Castro (67) all logged good shifts. Sam Pilgrim (56) and Preston-Watkins (44) both logged good minutes from the bench.

The Wildcats end its opening GLIAC weekend with four points, defeating the #5 SVSU Cardinals on Friday before the one-all draw today.
