PREVIEW: 'Cats host Panthers and Lakers for Senior Weekend

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The NMU women's lacrosse team will compete against Davenport on Friday and GVSU on Sunday at the Superior Dome.

The Wildcats will be honoring seniors Emily Radke, Mya Snyder, and Laine Stanton before the Grand Valley game on Sunday for their senior weekend.

The Wildcats (9-3, 3-1 GLIAC) are coming off a dominant 16-7 win over Concordia St. Paul to open up its final homestand on Saturday, April 4. They ended their previous road series with a 14-6 victory at Davenport and are riding a two-game win streak into the rematch on Friday as NMU looks to sweep the Panthers. Currently, NMU sits one game ahead of Davenport in the standings and one game behind unbeaten GVSU as the weekend series is primed to be a crucial one for playoff seeding.

Davenport (8-5, 2-2 GLIAC) bounced back to beat Non-Conference opponent Findlay after dropping back-to-back conference games to NMU and GVSU. They won 10-6 and were buoyed by Gabby Basha's hat-trick of goals and an assist. 3 other players added two goals each as Davenport won the closely contested game. Davenport remains a game behind NMU in the race for second place in the GLIAC standings.

GVSU (5-7, 4-0 GLIAC) is riding a five game win-streak after beginning the season 0-7, going into games at Concordia Wisconsin and NMU. Most recently, the Lakers smashed the SVSU Cardinals 20-4 as they outshot them 49-10 and won 16 draw controls to SVSU's 8. Additionally, GVSU forced 8 turnovers. GVSU were led by Ella Boose with 5 goals, Ainsley Shilling with 3 goals and 2 assists, and Eliana Lemarge with 5 points on 2 goals. The Cardinals dropped another as they continue to remain in the basement of the GLIAC standings, while the Lakers remain in sole possession of first place, a game ahead of the Wildcats.

The matchup against Davenport on Friday, April 10th, will mark the second of three games on this homestand, as the Wildcats will face Grand Valley (who they lost 4-9 to earlier in the season) on Sunday, April 12th, to close their homestand. GVSU will be the team's final home game of the season.

The games are scheduled for 5 pm on Friday, April 10th, and noon on Sunday, April 12. Attendance to the games is free for fans, and the games can be streamed on FloSports.

The Wildcats opened their trio of home games by downing the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears 16-7 from the Superior Dome last Saturday.

The Wildcats got another outstanding effort from junior attacker Josie Lakosky, who paced the field with eight goals and three assists for 11 points on 11 shots with 10 on target. Thanks to her efforts, the attacker was honored with both IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week and GLIAC Attacker of the Week honors.

Not only was Lakosky fire on offense, but in the draw circle as well, pulling down a career-best 10 of the Wildcats 17 draw controls, while the Golden Bears as a team were held to nine in total.

Lakosky has now scored eight goals on four occasions, with three of those also including 11-point outings, and has scored at least three goals or recorded three points in all but one game this season.

Lakosky is now in striking distance of breaking and setting numerous single-season NMU program records: 11 away from the goals record, 14 away from the assists record, 24 away from the points record, 5 away from the GB record, 15 away from the DC record, and 6 away from the CT record.

As a team, NMU had advantages in shots (32-17) and shots on goal (22-11), draw controls (17-9), caused turnovers (13-6), and went 15/16 on clear attempts, compared to 15/20. CSP held a slim advantage in ground balls (18-16) and recorded four more turnovers (20-16).

With the win, NMU reached the nine-win mark, the second-fastest in program history, behind the 2024 team that went 9-2 to open the season.

Coach Majkrzak summed up the turnaround from the defeat against GVSU and how the victory would help them prepare for Davenport and the GVSU rematch, by saying, "We changed how we prepped for Concordia, so we want to be able to use that going into this week and see that we had success based on the way we prepped last week, which will hopefully help us be more prepared for the intensity that we need to have for these two coming games this weekend. It was just that we had more full-speed reps in practice, more live reps, and more of our best defenders playing in Concordia St. Paul's style of defense instead of our traditional scout team versus our own strategy.  It was clear that more intense practice play really benefited us. So, we're trying a similar formula with our practice structure in the next week to see what we can get out of this week and best prepare for these upcoming games."

Notably, Junior attacker Josie Lakosky earned the second IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week honor of her career, and the third GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honor this season, this past week after her Her eight goals were accompanied by three assists for 11 points, marking her third 11-point performance of the season, along with 11 shot attempts with 10 of those on target.

Nationally, Lakosky remains among the best of the best at goal scoring and offensive talent: her p/g (7.00) leads the nation and her 84 points is second, her 62 goals is one shy of the national lead (in three fewer games played) and her g/g mark of 5.17 is second, and her shots per game (10.33) and shots on goal per game (8.83) averages are both second.
