PREVIEW: Lacrosse to play Cardinals and #3/5 Greyhounds

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The NMU lacrosse team is on the road for the penultimate weekend of regular-season play.

The Wildcats (10-4, 4-2 GLIAC) will begin with second-year GLIAC foe, the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (1-10, 0-4 GLIAC) on Sunday, April 19, before turning its attention to one of the best teams in the country, the #3/5 University of Indianapolis Greyhounds (10-1, 3-0 GLVC) for a Tuesday, April 21 match in Indianapolis. The meeting between the two sides was originally scheduled for March 15, but was postponed due to inclement weather, and rescheduled for this week.

The Wildcats have appeared in the first NCAA DII regional ranking poll, holding a 9-4 record against Midwest Region opponents. The Greyhounds, who hold a perfect 8-0 record against in-region foes, also appear on the list, along with GLIAC foe Grand Valley State, who holds a 7-3 record against Midwest teams, followed by the University of Colorado Springs at 9-5 against in-region foes. Both the Mountain Lions and Lakers defeated the 'Cats by only one goal this season.

Hear from Head Coach Lindsey (LeMay) Majkrzak

The Wildcats got a split final weekend at home, an emphatic win over Davenport and a heartbreaking loss to Grand Valley on senior day, and there was one player who continues to jump off the page for the Green and Gold.

Junior attacker Josie Lakosky has been cementing herself as one of the premier goal scorers in the nation, as she earned IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week honors and GLIAC Attacker of the Week honors for the second consecutive week.

Lakosky had a memorable weekend; she matched the NMU single-game program goals (9) and points (13) record in the 21-4 win over Davenport on Friday, then broke the NMU single-season goals record with five more tallies against Grand Valley on Sunday, all while eclipsing 100 points this season to become just the second player in an NMU jersey to score 100+ points in a season (Minnie Bittell, 2024, 108).

Along with setting the single-season NMU goals record (previous record was 72), Lakosky has set the single-season shots on goal (now 134) and has tied the single-season ground ball record (currently 44). Josie is also one away from tying both the draw control (85) and caused turnover (29) records, and is within striking distance of the single-season points (five away, 108), assists (nine away, 36), and shots (16 away, 171).

"It's actually crazy. She's doing things that have never been done before," says head coach Majkrzak during her weekly media availability. "I'm so impressed with her work ethic and how she's overcome people guarding her aggressively. The way she was able to score in both the Grand Valley and Davenport and was just able to dominate, it's so impressive."

Statistically, Lakosky is the best goal scorer in the country, as she has accumulated 76 goals and 27 assists for 103 points on the season, leading the DII lacrosse landscape in goals, goals per game, points, points per game, and shots on goal per game.

"To have that person at Northern Michigan is really special… I'm so proud of her for everything that she's achieved, and she's breaking records while we still have regular-season and postseason games to go, it's really cool [to see]."

The Wildcats have two GLIAC conference games and one nonconference game to go before the regular season finishes, starting with the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Sunday. The Cardinals are newcomers to the GLIAC, and the lacrosse landscape as a whole, as the Cardinals are in their second season as a team.

"I really like their facility and their field. It's a really fun place to play; the field has lacrosse-specific lines, and we'll have a ton of families there, so we should have a really good turnout. I'm really excited for us to go and perform, and hopefully have a little bounce back after Grand Valley [last weekend] to get the good vibes rolling again, and then have that be the start to a very strange road trip."

The rest of that road trip entails a rare Tuesday afternoon matchup, as the team will head five hours south to Indianapolis to meet the #3/5 UIndy Greyhounds. NMU has played on Tuesday five times in program history, holding a 2-3 record on the second day of the week, with the most recent instance coming as a 12-15 loss to Rockhurst on the team's spring break trip to Missouri in 2022.

"I think it'll be fun, but a little odd going from Saginaw Valley to one of the top-ranked teams in the country… I'm excited to play UIndy, especially after how close we played Grand Valley, and I think this will be a good test for the GLIAC Tournament. Being able to match speed and match athletes with a high-intensity opponent will hopefully help us perform against Concordia, who always plays really well at home."
