PREVIEW: Wildcat Lacrosse Heads to Lower Peninsula for a Pair of Weekend Matches

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The NMU women's lacrosse team continues its conference slate, hitting the road for matchups against Grand Valley State and Davenport University.

The 'Cats start with the Lakers on Friday, March 27, at 5 p.m. from the GVSU Lacrosse Stadium in Allendale, Michigan, before heading a half an hour east to Grand Rapids, Michigan. NMU then plays the Panthers on Sunday, March 29, at 1 p.m. from the DU Turf Field.

The games are available to stream on Flo Live, and fans can follow along with live results at nmuwildcats.com.

The Wildcats (7-2, 1-0 GLIAC) are off to a hot start and are coming off a 23-1 win over Saginaw Valley State. Junior attacker Josie Lakosky was honored as GLIAC Forward of the Week after posting eight goals and three assists. Lakosky's shooting percentage was equally as impressive; her nine shots were all on-target, giving her a 1.00 SOG%, as well as an astonishing .889 SH%, scoring on all but one of her shots.

After the weekend, Lakosky led the nation in goals per game, averaging just north of five at 5.22, as well as total points (65) and points per game (7.22). Lakosky's total goals (47) are second only to Madison Primeau of Lees-McRae (48). Her shots per game (10.33) and shots on goal per game (9.11) are also second and first in the country.

The Lakers (1-7, 0-0 GLIAC) will open its conference slate against the Wildcats on Friday before hosting Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday. Despite the 1-7 record, the Lakers have had a tough slate to start their season, including an opening season stretch of #21 Seton Hill, #7 Slippery Rock, #3 UIndy, #4 Maryville, #21 Florida Tech, and #14 Rollins. GVSU got its first win of the season last weekend, defeating Missouri Western 9-6.

The Wildcats have yet to defeat the Lakers in the history of meetings between these two sides. The 'Cats have come close on multiple occasions under head coach Lindsey (LeMay) Majkrzak, including a heartbreaking 11-12 OTL in Marquette last year, and a 10-11 loss in the GLIAC Postseason Championship game in 2023.

The Panthers (6-3, 1-0) garnered a 17-6 win over SVSU to open its conference slate, and will meet Concordia-St. Paul on Friday before the 'Cats on Sunday. As a team, Davenport holds a slim lead on the conference over NMU in goals scored (135) and caused turnovers (108), and is tied with the 'Cats in draw controls.

Despite having a 6-9 overall record against the Panthers, it has been NMU in control in recent memory: NMU is 5-1 in the last six meetings, outscoring DU 76-44 in that stretch. Davenport got the better of NMU in the last meeting between these two, winning 11-9 in Grand Rapids last season.
