PREVIEW: Indoor Track & Field competes at the WCW Tri-Meet

MARQUETTE, Mich. - After another excellent performance at the Jet's Pizza Invite, where the Northern Michigan track & field team had two wins, three runners-up, and four third-place finishes, the Wildcats will be back in action this weekend, taking part in the WCW Tri-Meet hosted by SVSU on Saturday, February 7th. The Invite will begin at 1 p.m. E.T. 

NMU will try to defend its back-to-back victories against the Cardinals and Warriors in hopes of securing a trio of consecutive meet wins.

Last Time Out
Northern competed at the Jet's Pizza Invite last weekend, where they finished with two wins, three second-place finishes, and four more in third place. 

In the 4000m DMR, Ashley Choponis, Beverly Harper, Ella DeBruyn, and Madi Szymanski took first place in a time of 11:59.64, edging Division I Oakland by over four seconds. 

Harper went on to claim an individual victory in the 800m. Her time of 2:14.31 bested the competition. 

Szymanski found the podium again as she finished the 3000m in 10:03.03 for second place. 

Choponis earned a second-place finish in the mile, crossing at 5:01.22. Right behind her was DeBruyn in third with a time of 5:01.66 as they won individual medals to complete the team victory. 

Sophia Potter finished in second at 17:50.34 in the 5000m. 

With a time of 25.22, Baux Truckey placed third in the 200m.

The relay team of Truckey, Lily Phillips, Lana Mac, and Harper finished in 3:59.55 for another bronze finish for the Wildcats.  

Alayna Vandegriff had NMU's lone top-3 finish in the field. She reached 10.62m in the triple jump for third.


Last Season at The WCW Tri-Meet
In the fifth annual WCW Tri-Meet featuring Northern, Saginaw Valley State, and Wayne State, the Wildcats took home their second consecutive win, edging out SVSU and WSU for the victory. In total, Northern had 21 podium finishes, with seven of those garnering first-place honors. The Wildcats collected 133 points, beating out WSU's 120.5 and SVSU's 85.5. Last season, the Wildcats became the first team to win the meet twice since its inception in 2021. 

Northern performed well across the board and had standout winning performances in the 800m, pole vault, long jump, weight throw, and triple jump. Beverly Harper was the top finisher in the 800m, taking the race in a time of 2:16.22. Kati Smith was victorious in the pole vault, where she reached a mark of 3.60m. In the long jump, Crystal Walker took top honors with a distance of 5.36m. Teiolla Harvey added another win in the weight throw, reaching a distance of 15.11m. Alayna Vandegriff won in the triple jump, hitting a winning distance of 10.86m.
