Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Braden Golisek - Assistant Director of Sports Information

Wildcats Improve to 4-0 with 14-8 Win over Lewis

Head coach Lindsey (LeMay) Majkrzak used an opportune timeout to spring an 11-2 run after falling behind 1-3 in the first quarter.

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The NMU lacrosse team moved to 4-0 to start the season, downing the Lewis Flters 14-8.

The 'Cats found themselves in a hole to start the match, as the Flyers jumped out to a 3-1 lead and were controlling play with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter. Head coach Lindsey (LeMay) Majkrzak called a timeout to regroup her team, which worked wonders.

After the timeout, the 'Cats scored three straight to end the first quarter to springboard into a 6-1 run to end the half, and an 11-2 run through the third quarter.

Leading the offensive charge once again was Josie Lakosky (4-3--7), but right behind her was Avery Lorinser (4-2--6), who posted career-bests in single-game goals and points. Emily Radke, Vanessa Carrico, and Abby Sisson each tacked on a pair of goals to round out the scoring.

Lakosky was efficient off the ball as well, causing two turnovers, scooping three ground balls, and controlling five draws. Both Natalie Thomas and Sophie Langsdale recorded a pair of their own caused turnovers, while Langsdale matched her career-best four ground balls.

In the draw circle, Evita Weiche and Katelyn Wozney each recorded a pair of draw controls and ground balls, with Weiche forcing one turnover on the day as well. Lauren Esposito made seven saves for a .467 SV%, earning her third win of the 2026 campaign.

The 'Cats 4-0 start to the season matches a program best, tying a mark that Majkrzak and her squad set during the 2023 season.

On the day, the 'Cats held a 26-22 shot advantage in a relatively even 13-14 shots on goal mark. The 'Cats scooped 23 ground balls to 11 and had a slight edge in caused turnovers at 10-9, and the Flyers controlled the draws at 13-11.

How It Happened
After seven minutes of game time and good goaltending from Esposito, the 'Cats finally opened the scoring thanks to a nifty couple of moves from Lakosky. The lead was short-lived, as McKinnon scored just 25 seconds later to bring the game back even. Lewis took a 3-1 lead to cap off a stretch where NMU was down 1-3  on draw controls, had four turnovers, and were outshot 8-2 with six on target to one, forcing Majkrzak to call a timeout.

Out of the timeout, the Wildcats won back to back draws, and got goals from Lakosky and Radke with a pair of assists from Lorinser to draw even once again. Mya Snyder forced a Lewis turnover in her defensive end, leading to a Lorinser goal, and just like that NMU scored three quick goals to take the laed before the end of the half.

Lakosky opened the scoring in the second period, capitalizing on a FPS after taking a hard foul. Lorinser added another tally of her own, responding to a Lewis tally, and maintaining the two-goal cushion. Lorinser continued her offensive output, adding a FPG with 23 seconds to go in the quarter, and NMU held a 7-4 lead into half.

Lakosky opened scoring in the third quarter to boost the 'Cats lead to four before adding an assist on Sisson's first tally of the game just one minute later. Lakosky forced a turnover on the ensuing draw, which would lead do a Sisson converting a FPS. Esposito made a key save on a FPS, Thomas ran the distance of the field for a clear, and Lakosky found Radke in a dangerous area who was able to convert.  Lewis scored man-up, but Carrico would respond just 30 seconds later to maintain the seven-point lead heading into the final frame.

Evita Weiche caused a turnover that was picked up by Lakosky, and Lorinser scored a FPG to set a career-high in points. In a similar vein to the start of the game, Lewis outscored NMU 1-3 to start the fourth quarter, and head coach Majkrzak used a timeout to reset. Sophie Langsdale responded to the timeout by causing a turnover, the defense made a good stand, and Lakosky would connect with Carrico for goal 14 of the game. Pascavis and Langsdale combined for a caused turnover and ground ball, and the 'Cats would hold onto a 14-8 win.
