PREVIEW: Lacrosse At Home vs Flyers before Colorado Road Trip

The Wildcats will play its last home game of the opening stand, and will now only have one home contest between the end of February and beginning of April

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The NMU women's lacrosse team will close out its home stand against the Lewis Flyers on Thursday, February 26, at 1 p.m. from the Superior Dome.

The Wildcats (3-0, 0-0 GLIAC) will look to improve to 4-0 to start a season for just the second time in program history. The only other instance came during the 2023 season, as the 'Cats opened the season 4-0 before falling 10-11 against Grand Valley in the GLIAC Championship.

The Flyers (1-1, 0-0 GLVC) continues its slate of facing GLIAC competition with the 'Cats on Thursday, after opening the season with a 23-2 win over Saginaw Valley State and a 6-12 loss against Concordia-St. Paul. The Flyers turn right back around after the contest with NMU, as the team heads back to Lewis Stadium in Romeoville, Illinois, to host Northwood on Saturday.

The Wildcats control the all-time meeting against the Flyers, as NMU is 6-0 against Lewis and has outscored the Flyers 92-39 in the two sides six matches.

The matchup is free for fans to attend, and fans can follow along to the action with a live stream on Flo College as well as live stats produced by Northern Michigan.

Hear from Lindsey (LeMay) Majkrzak

The Wildcats are coming off of a 15-5 win over McKendree to extend to a perfect 3-0 to open the season, and head coach Majkrzak says that her team "did a pretty good job of shutting them down".

"It was overall a good performance for us offensively, but I do think we had a lull after halftime," said Majkrzak, who saw her team hold a seven-point lead at the break. "We switched what offense we were in to try and give us longer offensive reps, but when we switched into that we dropped intensity and stopped driving to goal, and that's when we say [McKendree] start to score and our offense slow down... Regardless of what the score is at halftime, we need to be able to hold intensity, because we are going to play teams who are able to come back... Overall, I can't be too mad about a 15-5 win, but we are seeing holes that we need to fix still."

The 'Cats now turn around for a unique contest against the Flyers, one which takes place at 1 p.m. on Thursday from the Superior Dome. The Flyers are coming off of a 6-12 loss to Concordia-St. Paul, where Amelia Procyk led Lewis with a team-best three goals and four points, Eliana Cappellini secured four ground balls and won three draw controls, and goalie Sophia Fountain made a season-high 12 saves.

"[Lewis] has a lot of returning student-athletes from last year, they play pretty similarly to last year, so I think it will be a good challenge to see if we can step up and maintain our intensity for the entire game."

A big reason for the success to start the year has been the play of reigning GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year, junior captain Josie Lakosky. In her first three games, she is leading the nation in points (29), points per game (9.67), goals per game (7.67), shots per game (14.33), shots on goal per game (12.67), and second in total goals (23). Lakosky also leads the GLIAC in assists (6), CT/game (2.67), FPG/game (1.67), FP% (0.625), and GB/game (4.33), and is second in DC/game (6.00).

On top of that, the attacker is already breaking program single-game records, as she she has scored a career-best eight goals twice and most recently set program best marks in shots (20) and shots on goal (17) in a single game.

"[Josie], athletically, looks different than she ever has. She's moving at a pace and an agility level that I haven't seen before... When she's going full speed you can't catch her, and when she's cutting side to side you can't stop her... I'm really excited about what she's done to put in the work athletically to be durable and be able to create openings for herself, while she's also passing the ball as well... I'm really proud of her start, and she's very excited and motivated to keep chugging along."
