Branden Piku named alternate captain

Piku joins captain Medrick Bolduc and alternate captain Joe Schiller for 2026/27

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- Head coach Dave Shyiak and the Northern Michigan University hockey team have announced that senior forward Branden Piku has been named alternate captain for the 2026/27 season.

Piku joins captain Medrick Bolduc and alternate captain Joe Schiller as the three Wildcats to wear captaincy letters on their jerseys.

"Branden brings veteran leadership to our group," adds head coach Dave Shyiak, who added the senior Lake Superior State transfer to the Wildcat roster this season. "He has earned the respect of our team and coaching staff. Branden leads daily on the ice, in the locker room, and away from the arena."

Piku joined the Wildcats after three seasons at Lake Superior State, where he scored 44 points in 93 games.

Piku has stepped into the Wildcat system and made an immediate impact, registering his first career Wildcat point in the 4-1 season-opening win over (RV) Miami (OH), and scoring his first goal as a member of the Green and Gold against #3 Michigan State.

Piku plays in all situations for the Wildcats, where he averages 15:29 of ice time - good for fifth among NMU forwards - including a season-high mark of 16:13 in the most recent matchup against Stonehill.

Piku will play in his 100th career game on Friday night against Augustana.
