Tyler Annala leads Wildcat Golf at Motor City Shakedown

DEARBORN, Mich. - The NMU men's golf team wrapped up competition at the Motor City Shakedown, finishing fourth of five teams and posting a trio of top-20 finishes.

The Wildcats had a great tournament, posting a three-round total of 921 (+57), just five strokes shy of tying the tenth-best three-round score in NMU men's golf history. The 'Cats also and carded 34 birdies, the fourth-most team birdies in 54 holes of play (behind three tournaments with 37 recorded birdies). The 15 birdies in round one matches the tenth-best team birdie count in 18 holes, and the 23 birdies in two rounds is just two shy of cracking the top ten in program history.

The 'Cats shot an impressive first round 295 (+7), and trailed only Davenport (-1) after the first round. From there, NMU carded rounds of 316 (+28) and 310 (+22). Hosts Wayne State won the tournament with its three-round total of +15, followed by Davenport (+20) and Roosevelt (+51). Purdue Northwest rounded out the field at +67.

As a team, the Wildcats were first among the field in par three scoring (+26. 3.36 avg.), third in par four scoring (+79, 4.44 avg.), and fifth in par five scoring (+10, 5.14). NMU's 34 team birdies and 176 pars were both third among the field

The TPC of Michigan course played as a 7,057 yard par 72 for all three rounds, with the average score from the field coming in at 77.65 after 105 rounds recorded. Only two holes averaged under-par scoring, those being the par-five 13th and seventh.

Leading the charge for the 'Cats was Tyler Annala, who shot rounds of 71 (-1), 79 (+7), and 78 (+6) for a three round total of 288 (+12), finishing 14th among the field. Annala came out of the gates hot, firing four birdies in his opening six holes to open the tournament at -4. and leading the field. Annala's opening round 71 featured six birdies, matching the six he recorded on this exact date at this exact tournament last season, one birdie shy of matching the program record. Annala recorded six more over the final two rounds to give him 12 circles on the tournament, good for second-most in the field, and a number that is good for third-most in program history. After his opening 71, Annala was second among the field as an individual. 

Both Arthur Ylitalo and Levi Pennala finished among the top-20, with the pair of them shooting matching 229s (+13) and finishing T17. Similar to Annala, Ylitalo had a great opening 18 holes, shooting an even 72 with five birdies, including three in his opening four holes, and finished T3 after 18 holes. Ylitalo and Annala led the team in par five scoring, averaging 4.92 and shooting -1 for the tournament, and Ylitalo was second to Annala on the team with nine birdies. Pennala had a terrific showing, leading the team and second among the field in total pars (37) and par three scoring (+1, 3.08 avg.). Pennala was second to Annala in par four scoring (+10, 4.33 avg.), and was third on the team with five birdies. 

Harvey Ylitalo finished just outside of the top-20, shooting a three-round total of 236 (+20) to finish T22. Ylitalo finished fourth among the field in par three scoring (+2, 3.17 avg.), and was eighth among the field in pars with 32. Jacob Daavettila had a memorable tournament, carding an eagle in his opening round on the 556 yard par-five 17th, the 15th eagle in Wildcat history and first of Daavettila's career. Daavettila finished with a tournament total of 241 (+25), and his 28 pars were third on the team, tied with A. Ylitalo. Rounding out the Wildcat's was Brady Badker, shooting a three-round score of 248 (+32), playing the par five's as the third-best Wildcat (+1, 5.08 avg.).
