PREVIEW: Wildcats Return to the Road for Second Weekend of GLIAC Play

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The NMU men's soccer team will take the road for a pair of GLIAC matches to close out the first month of the 2025 season. After falling in the team's home conference opener last weekend, the 'Cats will return to the pitch to continue the conference campaign.

In the first weekend of conference play, the Wildcats fell short of the Parkside Rangers in a 3-1 decision, moving the team's overall record to 1-1-3 and 0-1-0 in conference play in the early season.

The Wildcats will aim to reclaim a spot in the Midwest Regional rankings, having been ranked ninth in the poll before the most recent loss to the Rangers bumped them out of the top ten. This weekend, the team will see competition from Purdue Northwest and Roosevelt, the latter of whom has moved into the eighth position in the most recent Midwest Region ranking.

Similar to the Wildcats, the Pride and the Lakers also only played one match last weekend, with both of them opening the conference schedule against each other in Hammond, Indiana, ending in a 2-2 draw. Purdue Northwest currently holds an overall record of 1-4-1, while Roosevelt has one of 2-1-3.

Hear from Alex Fatovic

"Purdue is a tough place to play and Roosevelt is defending co-champions... any time you go on the road in the GLIAC, nothing is easy; you're away from home and you're out of your routine, so right now we're focusing on Purdue before we turn our attention to Roosevelt."

'Cat Nips
  • The Wildcats do a good job of generating offensive opportunities, as NMU is second in the GLIAC in shots per game (12.80) and third in corner kicks per game (4.80). NMU outshoots their opponents 64-47, including 26 on target to 19, and has 24 corners to opponents 16.
  • Leading the offensive charge are Teun Van Gansewinkel and Luca Rosen. They both lead the conference in shots (16), with Rosen second (9) and Van Gansewinkel fourth (7) in shots on target.
  • Van Gansewinkel remains the team's leader in points, with two goals, just one shy of the conference leaders.
  • Rosen, Alessandro Scialanga, Davian Gumbs, and James Carr all have one assist, also one shy of the conference leaders.
  • Asaf Krital, NMU's goalkeeper, has started his NMU career with flying colors, as one of the top goalkeepers in all of the statistical categories. In the early season among conference netminders, Kristall is second in goals against (5), GAA (1.00), and shutouts (2), third in saves (14), and fourth in saves per game (2.80) and SV% (.737).
  • Scialanga is the only field player to not miss a minute of action this season, playing all 450 minutes for the green and gold. Behind him are Owen Rutledge (443), Carr (439), and Quint Van Roij (437).

Notes on the Opponents
Purdue Northwest
The Pride hold the fourth spot in the GLIAC standings entering the second weekend of conference play. After scoring just two goals in the opening three matches, the team has found a goal-scoring touch as of late, as Purdue has scored two or more goals in the team's previous three outings.

The Pride are led by Hugo Lorenzo and Landon Potts, both of whom have a pair of goals and an assist for five points. Lorenzo holds a tie with Van Gansewinkel and Rosen for the conference lead in shots (16), and has matched Rosen in shots on goal (9) on the season. Demian Martinez has a pair of assists on the season, good enough for a tie for first in the conference.

While the team's nine goals scored is the second-best mark in the conference, the Pride holds the worst goals against mark at 15, and has allowed three goals against in four of its six games played.

The Pride are 5-1-1 against NMU in the last seven meetings, with the Wildcats' last win in Hammond coming on October 24, 2021.

Roosevelt
After making it to the conference championship in its first season as a Division II program, the Lakers were picked to finish second in the conference in the 2025 GLIAC Preseason Poll. The Lakers enter the weekend ranked eighth in the Midwest Regional rankings and will meet Parkside on Friday before the clash with NMU on Sunday.

Fynn Mewes leads the team and is atop the conference in goals (3), game-winning goals (2), points (7), and yellow cards (4). Behind Mewes is Noah Vasilev, who leads the team in assists (2) and is second in both goals (2) and points (6). Goalkeeper Eric Carvajal leads the conference in saves (31) and SV% (.816), second in saves per game (5.17), and is fourth in goals against (7).

The Lakers have been booked for 14 yellow cards, third-most in the conference, and have a red card on the ledger. Fouling in the box has been an issue this season, as they have conceded five penalty kicks.

Roosevelt has been victorious in the only two meetings in the two sides' program history, coming as a 1-0 win in Marquette and a 3-1 win in Chicago last season.
