Men's Soccer Play Lake Erie to 1-1 Draw

Wildcats led 1-0 until the Storm scored a wonder-goal with three minutes left on their only shot on target

PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Wildcats concluded its non-conference schedule and finished its longest road trip of the season in Ohio, playing the Lake Erie Storm to a heartbreaking 1-1 draw.

The Wildcats (1-0-3 overall, 0-0-0 GLIAC) got a goal from Teun Van Gansewinkel a half an hour into the game after Davian Gumbs made a brilliant effort to win the ball on the far touch line, beat an oncoming defender, and slide a pass to the unmarked Dutchman, who had a yawning cage to score.

Entering the weekend as the eighth-ranked team in the region, the Storm (0-0-4 overall, 0-0-0 G-MAC) played to its fourth-consecutive draw thanks to a goal from Benjamin Lerida with just over three minutes to play in the game.

The Wildcats outshot the Storm 7-4, including holding Lake Erie to one shot attempt in the opening half, while both teams scored on their only shot on target. The Wildcat defense played incredibly today, holding the Storm to just two attempts through 84 minutes before Lake Erie connected on a wonder goal to steal a tie at home.

Along with goalkeeper Asaf Kristal, the Wildcats had four field players play the full ninety minutes: Alessandro Scialanga, James Carr, Owen Rutledge, and Terry Grimaldi. Quint Van Roij (85) and Andrea Mercanti (84) also contributed major minutes, while Tyler Kowalczyk (32) paced the Wildcats off the bench.

The goal scorer, Van Gansewinkel, led the field in shot attempts (3) and recorded the 'Cats only shot on target.

There were four total yellow cards shown, two given to each side, with Scialanga and Rosen being booked for their first of the season.

How It Happened
The Wildcats earned the game's first quality opportunity with a corner kick seven minutes into the contest. A well-delivered ball into the box was met by a Wildcat forward who got a header towards the target, but just missed the far side post.

Minutes later, NMU earned another corner from the same side. The ball landed in the box but was cleared, only to find the foot of Hoffman about 20 yards out. He struck the ball extraordinarily well, but it just sailed over the crossbar.

The Wildcats opened the scoring a half an hour into the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats earned another corner, which was delivered into the box, but cleared away. A Wildcat defender played a ball into the bottom left corner to Gumbs, who made contact first time to direct it toward the touchline. Gumbs swiftly stole the ball back on the line before making another defender miss on his run toward the post. The keeper came out to challenge, but Gumbs calmly slid the ball to Van Gansewinkel, whose run was unmarked and had a wide-open net to score.

After 45 minutes of play, the 'Cats held the advantage in the statistical categories: up a goal, three shots to one, with the lone shot on goal finding the back of the net. NMU also had three corners to Lake Erie none.

After a subdued second half where the Wildcats held the Storm to two shot attempts with non on target for the first 41 minutes, Lake Erie would find a late equalizer with three minutes to go. From right in front of the NMU bench, Velijko Radovanovic played a big sweeping cross to the far post. Benjamin Lerida made his run and connected with the wonder-pass to score the equalizer and steal a draw for his side.
