Lacrosse Wins on Senior Day

The 'Cats and Golden Bears will meet in the first round of the GLIAC postseason for the third-consecutive season

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The NMU lacrosse team defeated the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears 8-7 on senior day to end the regular season with a win.

The game started slowly for the offense, as the teams combined for just seven goals in the first 30 minutes of play, marking the first time this season that both teams have combined for seven or fewer goals in the first half. The last instance of teams combining for seven or fewer tallies in the opening half was on 4/21/24, a 2-13 loss at Grand Valley.

The teams then combined for eight goals in the second half, with five of those goals coming in the fourth quarter, and four coming nearly a minute apart.

The Wildcats (10-7, 4-4 GLIAC) were on the correct side of a wild fourth quarter, as the teams scored a combined four goals in just 74 seconds of game time. Josie Lakosky, who led all athletes with three tallies, scored two of her goals just 16 seconds apart before Emily Radke scored the eventual game-winner four minutes later.

The Golden Bears (9-7, 5-3 GLIAC) had an opportunity to tie the game late with an open look at goal with under thirty seconds left, but goalkeeper Lauren Esposito made her biggest save of the night to close the door and secure the Wildcat win. Esposito ended the evening with five saves from 12 shots on target.

The 'Cats got goal contributions from Katelyn Wozney, Laine Stanton, Taylor Priestley, and Abby Sisson. Camryn Mayer recorded the only assist for the team. Sophie Langsdale and Maddi Bast had dominant performances on defense, causing four turnovers and two ground balls and three caused turnovers and three ground balls, respectively.

These two teams will meet each other in the first round of the GLIAC postseason tournament for the third consecutive time. NMU is 2-0 against the Golden Bears in those games.

How It Happened
In a low-scoring opening half, the Wildcats struck first off the stick of senior Priestley before Lakosky added another tally to give NMU a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.

The Golden Bears tied the contest two minutes into the second quarter, then there were no goals scored until ten minutes later. Stanton whistled home a shot from the eight-meter. The Golden Bears responded a minute later, then a buzzer-beater free-position goal gave CSP a 4-3 lead going into halftime.

Concordia opened the scoring just a minute into the half to give them a two-goal cushion, but a free-position goal from Wozney and a tally from Sisson with thirty seconds left made it all square going into the final frame.

There was a hectic minute and 14 seconds around five minutes into the quarter, as Lakosky scored a pair of goals just 16 seconds apart to give NMU a 7-5 lead. CSP responded with a goal of their own just 14 seconds later before tying the game with another goal 44 seconds later, marking four total goals scored in 74 seconds of game time.

Radke scored to give NMU a one-goal lead with seven minutes left, but there was still plenty of time left. The Golden Bears had an open look at the goal with little time remaining, but Esposito made a clutch save with 20 seconds left to preserve the 'Cats lead and run out the clock, securing the win on senior day.
