Wildcats Finish 10th at Lewis Flyer Spring Invite

WHEATON, Ill. - After an hour delay due to frost, the NMU men's golf team battled through chilly temps to finish 10th at Lewis Flyer spring invitational.

The 'Cats shot a two-day total of 629 (+53), shaving seven strokes off of its day one total of 318 with a score of 311 on day two. William Jewel took home first place with a two-day total of 599 (+23), followed closely by Davenport at 600 (+24) and Maryville at 604 (+28). 

For the tournament, the 'Cats played the par threes with an average of 3.43, the par fours at 4.47, the par fives at 5.23, and fired home 93 pars  and 13 birdies. 

Arthur Ylitalo led the Wildcats over two days with his score of 154 (+10), finishing T22 overall and seven strokes back of second place Andrew Conrad at +3. Arthur shaved four strokes off his round one score, shooting a +3 75 today after a +7 79 the day prior. Arthur started with a par on hole eight today before his only two blemishes of the day, a bogey on nine and a quadruple-bogey on 12, going +5 in his first five holes. Arthur turned it around on a dime after that, scoring a par on the par three 14th followed by back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th before rattling off ten consecutive pars to finish -2 in his final 13 holes. Arthur posted 26 pars in two days, the second most among the field and only one shy of the leader, and was the best Wildcat on the par threes (3.25 avg.) and par fives (5.00 avg).

Tyler Annala finished second on the team and T30 among the field with his score of 156 (+12) thanks to matching rounds of 78 on both days. Annala started on the seventh hole today and was -1 thru his first eight holes thanks to back-to-back birdies of his own, coming on the par five 11th and par four 12th. The 11th saw 13 birdies and the 12th saw only six birdies on the tournament, and were the seventh and second-hardest holes with scoring averages of 5.45 and 4.75, respectively. Annala matched Arthur and was even in par five scoring, and his three birdies were a tie for team-best and four back of the leader. 

Two strokes back of Annala and third among team scoring was Walter Ylitalo, posting a two-day total of 158 (+14) after rounds of 78 and 80 to finish T40 among the field. Walter led the team in par four scoring (4.30 avg) and tied the team lead in birdies with three on the tournament, including a second-round birdie on the par four fourth. 

Rounding out team scoring was Kyle Maki, who turned in a two-day total of 161 (+17) after shaving five strokes off his first round 83 and posting a second-round 78. Maki posted three birdies on the tournament, matching the team lead, including two back-to-back in round two, carding circles on the par four first and par five second. The first only saw nine birdies and the second saw ten, and were the 13th and sixth hardest holes over two days, respectively. 

Joe Luke was the final 'Cat who competed as a member of the team, finishing T58 with his two day score of +20 (164). Luke shaved two strokes off his first round, including picking up his second birdie of the tournament when he recorded a circle on the par five seventh in the second round. 

Russel Sprecher competed as an individual, where he finished T45 with a two-day total of 160 (+16). Sprecher was the second Wildcat in total pars over two rounds, posting 21 pars for the tournament.

The 'Cats have a quick turnaround to its next event, now looking toward the Bill Blazer Memorial in Grove City, Ohio, at the Pinnacle Golf Club on Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6. The two-day event sees the athletes play two rounds on Saturday before the final round on Sunday.
