QUERETARO, Mexico -
Jonathan Gurule of the Northern Michigan Greco-Roman Wrestling team competed at the U23 Pan-Am Championships in Mexico on Thursday, where he earned a silver medal.
Gurule claimed his runner-up finish in the 63kg weight class. He opened up competition with a 12-1 win over Marcelo Nahim (Argentina). A tight battle with Angel Gabriel (Mexico) followed, with Gabriel narrowly edging Gurule via a 2-1 decision.
Gurule bounced back in round three with an 8-4 win over Sebastian Hernan (Chile) 8-4.
Gurule started strong with a 1-0 lead, but found himself trailing 3-1 after an opponent takedown and step out. Gurule answered with a big four-point move to go back in front 5-3 at the break. In the second, Gurule held his ground, adding an arm spin to land on top for two. After a failed challenge from Chile, Gurule secured the 8-4 win.
