Wildcats Fall to No.5 Maryville

ST. LOUIS, MO. - The NMU women's lacrosse team rounded out its spring break trip with a battle against the No. 5 Marryville Saints, dropping the contest 18-4.

The Wildcats (4-2, 0-0 GLIAC) were held to a season-low in goals, and allowed the most goals against in a single game since the last time they played the Saints, a 25-10 defeat last season. Maryville (5-1, 0-0 GLVC) continues its heater as they are 5-0 since the season-opening loss to No. 1 Tampa, and have out scored their opponents 68-9 over its last three contests.

Avery Lorinser (2-0--2) and Hannah Jabas (1-1--2) led the team in points, followed by a goal from Abby Sisson and an assist from Sophie Langsdale. The Wildcat netminders split time again today; Zoe Montgomery matched a career-best 11 saves, and Lauren Esposito recorded eight.

The 'Cats were outshot 41-22, recorded 11 ground balls to the Saints 22, had 19 turnovers to 10, and caused five turnovers to the Saints 10 caused turnovers. Natalie Tomljenovic scored six goals, three other saints recorded four points, and Gianna Guzek made eight saves. 

NMU now looks ahead to this coming weekend, as the team returns home for a single contest against Lewis University on Saturday, March 15, at noon ET. 

How It Happened
The 'Cats controlled the opening possession, but it was the Saints who struck first off a free position shot. The Saints scored a pair of goals and goalkeeper Guzek had to make four saves before the 'Cats scored its first, as Lorinser completed a bang-bang play off a Jabas assist. Maryville responded with two more goals in the final minute and a half, and the Saints carried a 5-1 lead after the first. 

The 'Cats had the first good opportunity of the second frame with a free position shot that was ultimately saved. The Saints went down the field and scored just under 15 seconds later. The 'Cats responded with a tally of their own, as Sisson worked her way into the 8-meter and took a perfect pass from Langsdale. Sisson collected and shot all in one motion to beat the keeper. The 'Cats had another long offensive zone possession they were unable to convert on, and the Saints scored it's seventh of the day and forcing NMU to use a timeout. Three more tallies from the Saints, and the half ended at 10-2.

It took five minutes before a goal was scored to open the second half, and it came from a free position shot for the Saints. Lakosky had a chance to strike back with a free position attempt of her own but was stopped. The Saints marched down and scored just a minute after their first, and the game entered running time. Lorinser responded with her second tally of the evening, bringing the game back to a nine-goal deficit. Esposito stood tall in goal, making back-to-back free position saves before the 'Cats made a successful clear and went on the attack. Two more Saint goals in the final two minutes and change, and the lead was 14-3.

The Saints struck first in the fourth, and Jabas responded on a free position shot to score her first of the game. A pair of unsuccessful NMU free position shots, the Saints scored its sixteenth tally with just over five minutes remaining, and LeMay used a timeout in response. The Saints scored a pair in the final minute and 45 seconds, and the game concluded 18-4.
