RECAP: Dominant First Quarter Propels Wildcats to Victory Over Davenport

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan women's lacrosse team earned a 9-6 victory in a tough battle against the Davenport Panthers in the Superior Dome on Friday.

A hat-trick from Josie Lakosky and goals from Maddi Bast (2) and Sophie Langsdale (1) in the first quarter gave the 'Cats a 6-1 lead after the first quarter and would carry that momentum from start to finish. Defensive stops, caused turnovers, crucial saves from Zoe Montgomery, and goals from Abby Sisson and Hannah Jabas closed out the game and ended in a Wildcat win.

Lakosky led Northern in points, with six goals and one assist, along with recording a season-high in shots with 14. Jabas and Bast ended the night with two goals each, while Sophie Langsdale and Sisson contributed a goal of their own to the scoreboard.

The Wildcats outshot the Panthers 32-20, 19 of those goals being on frame for the 'Cats versus DU's eight. Both teams went 10-10 in ground balls and 17-17 in turnovers, with six of those turnovers being caused by Davenport compared to three being from NMU. Northern completed 18 out of 19 clears in contrast to the Panthers' 17 out of 20 completed clears. The 'Cats 18 clears tie a season-high (3/7/25 vs Missouri Western).

NMU now moves to 7-3 overall and remains perfect in GLIAC play, 2-0 to start the year. The Panthers slip to 5-3 overall and drop their first conference game of the season. The Green and Gold are now ready to face No. 17/16 Grand Valley State on Sunday, March 30, at noon.

How It Happened
A draw control won by Jabas started the Wildcats with possession. With some back-and-forth play and a few clears from both teams, Lakosky found the back of the net twice to put the 'Cats up 2-0 in the first five minutes. Just two minutes later, Bast scored a free-position goal, and Lakosky added another one to the scoreboard. Davenport found one of their own in the 12th minute, but Langsdale and Bast kept the momentum and fired one in each to end the first quarter 6-1.

The Panthers came out hot in the second quarter. Scoring a goal just three minutes in, Davenport found the back of the net once again in the eighth minute to make the score 6-3. Though Northern was still up, they were unable to put one in during the second quarter.

Davenport started the third quarter off once again with a goal to turn the score 6-4. But Jabas was determined to keep the 'Cats up, whipped one into the back of the net to add to the scoreboard. With the tough battle continuing, Davenport found another goal, ending the third quarter 7-5.

A slow start to the fourth quarter led to a crucial goal by Sisson inside the eight-meter, assisted by Taylor Priestley, to add goal number eight to the scoreboard for Northern. Lakosky then found Jabas making a run inside the eight-meter to end the match 9-6.
